If baseball history has taught us anything, it’s that we shouldn’t necessarily look at the teams who are on top at this stage of the season as the ones who are a shoe-in for postseason play. That doesn’t mean we can’t speculate about the playoffs, though, and right now, a great match-up in the American league would see the Kansas City Royals and the Houston Astros lock horns. They might not meet in the playoffs, but we can get a glimpse at what it might look like when they meet up in KC for a 3-game series starting on Friday, with the Royals as favorites in the sports betting odds.

There is no denying that the Kansas City Royals (57-36) are one of the best teams in baseball right now, as their record is second only to the St. Louis Cardinals. They will actually get to play a single makeup game with the Cards before the start of this series, but they are already proving that what happened in the first half of the season was no fluke. They have won their first two series of the second half, posting a 5-2 record in the process. For the most part, they have been solid defensively, as they gave up 2 runs or less in 5 of the 7 games played after the break. The fact that they have been scoring runs on top of that is just icing on the cake. They now hold a 7.5 game lead atop the AL Central, and are starting to look like runaway winners. Danny Duffy (4-4, 4.24 ERA) will head to the mound on Friday in search of his 3rd straight win.The Houston Astros (53-43) have fallen two games off the pace in the West, but that has more to do with how well the Angels are playing than anything else. The Astros have certainly got the second half of the season off to a solid start, winning 4 of 5 and sitting on the brink of delivering a sweep of the Boston Red Sox. They will be happy to see that the bat seem to have come to life during this stretch, as they are scoring an average of a little over 6 runs per game since the All-Star break. They also have to be loving the play of pitcher Dallas Keuchel, as he has now posted 7 scoreless starts this season, which is closing in on the franchise record of 10 set by Roger Clemens. It will be Scott Feldman (4-5, 4.93 ERA) who will be trying to bounce back after taking the loss in his last start.

The Astros swept the Royals when they met during the first half, but that was in their own field. The Royals are a whole lot better at home, while the Astros are just 21-26 on the road this season. That all points to a Royals win in this one.
