NY Mets at Texas MLB Betting Analysis & Expert Tips for Tuesday

Written by on June 5, 2017

It looked like an intriguing series when the 2017 MLB schedule came out, but both the New York Mets and Texas Rangers are struggling this season as they square off in an interleague matchup on Tuesday. The Mets are coming off a 3 game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend, ending the series at 1-2. The Rangers didn’t have a great weekend against the leading Houston Astros, with a 3 game weekend series ending in horrible fashion, losing all 3 games to their local rivals. The Mets will add the designated hitter.

Why Bet On NY Mets?

The Mets lost two of three at home over the weekend to Pittsburgh and were routed 11-1 on Sunday. The Mets are holding out hope that Yoenis Cespedes can join them as a DH for this series. Cespedes was cleared to resume hitting this past week at the Mets’ spring training complex in Florida, but he’s not running yet. The big slugger was pulled off his rehab assignment last Saturday after experiencing right quad soreness. He initially landed on the disabled list April 28 with a left hamstring strain. Lucas Duda is red hot for the Mets with six homers in his last 10 games. Duda is hitting .383 (18-47) with five doubles, six homers, 14 RBI and nine runs scored in his last 12 games. He has reached base safely in 20 of his last 21 games for a .407 on-base percentage. Duda has 118 career home runs, tied with Ed Kranepool for the 10 th most in franchise history. Edgardo Alfonzo is ninth on the list with 120 homers. Wilmer Flores 21-for-his-last-54 (.389) with two homers and 10 RBI vs. righthanded pitching and is hitting .400 (10-25) with two homers vs. lefthanders. Overall, Flores is batting .306 (34-111) with 16 RBIs. Jacob deGrom (4-2, 3.97) makes his first career start vs. the Rangers on Tuesday night in Texas. He tries to bounce back from his last outing, when he gave up seven runs in four innings against Milwaukee. It marked the third time in 2017 that deGrom has issued five or more walks in a start — something he didn’t do even once in either of the last two seasons. His spike in strikeouts (now 92 in 68 innings) certainly helps compensate for that decline in control, but the results have not been great for the 28-year-old righty, as he’s now sitting on a 3.97 ERA and 1.37 WHIP — both easily career worsts. However, he also holds career highs in BABIP (.338) and HR/FB (18.2 percent), suggesting that deGrom has been the victim of some bad luck. The Rangers are one of eight teams that deGrom, the former NL Rookie of the Year, has never faced. Jonathan Lucroy is the Rangers’ only active position player with a history against deGrom. The catcher is 2-for-12 versus deGrom, who has never before started in the state of Texas. Before the Rangers traded for Lucroy in July, the Mets were among his most ardent suitors.

Why Bet On Texas?

The Rangers were swept over the weekend at home by Houston to fall to 26-31. Texas is in fourth place, 15 games behind the Astros, who have the major leagues’ best record at 41-16 — and six wins in seven games against the Rangers. Texas’ Elvis Andrus extended the second-longest active hitting to 10 games with a single in the sixth inning Sunday. First baseman Mike Napoli was out of the lineup for the third time in six games Sunday because of back spasms. Manager Jeff Banister said the spasms recurred during Saturday’s game and that Napoli might undergo an evaluation on the off day Monday if there isn’t improvement. Dillon Gee, a former Met, will start for the Rangers on Tuesday in place of the injured A.J. Griffin. The 31-year-old has appeared in two games out of the bullpen for the Rangers, hurling 6 1/3 scoreless innings while posting a minuscule 0.90 WHIP and 5/1 K/BB ratio. Gee was with the Mets from 2010-15, and is good friends with deGrom. “Great dude,” Gee said. “It’s just coincidental. I look at this as another start. It’s a good opportunity to go out there and win a spot in the rotation. I want to make sure I keep our team in the game and give us an opportunity to win.” He’ll be going up against a team that has hit well on the road this season. At home, the Mets have been pedestrian, their power-dependent offense resting in the bottom half of the Majors in home runs. On the road, they have been dynamic, with 42 homers and a National League-leading .842 OPS in 22 games, averaging more than six runs per night.
