We are now into the third full week of the MLB betting season, and we are already starting to see the divisions take shape. It is becoming clear which ones are likely to be a one or two horse race, but there are still a couple that look as though they may be tight, top to bottom, all season long. One of those divisions is the AL West, where just 2 games separate the division leading Houston Astros from the cellar dwelling Texas Rangers. Sitting in the middle are the Los Angeles Angels and the Oakland A’s, a pair of teams in the midst of a 4-game series that will continue on Wednesday night.

All the chatter at the moment is about the status of Josh Hamilton, and where he is going to end up once he is healthy and suspension free once again. The Angels ownership are already trying to distance themselves from the troubled slugger, and it’s creating a level of drama that the team could do without. Making matters worse is that they are struggling on the field, and have not been able to string together more than 2 wins in a row. They have also yet to post a win at home, including losing the first game in this series. The Angels will send Jered Weaver (0-2, 6.61 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday, which may not be good news. He seems to have lost some velocity, and has been susceptible to the long ball as a result.The one thing that has been missing for the Oakland A’s (7-7) this season is consistency. They have not won or lost more than 2 games in a row through their 14 games so far this season. The A’s are a hard team to figure out as this point, as there are games where they look great, followed by games where they struggle quite badly. If they can find a way to play that great ball on a consistent basis, they could well take control of a tight division. 25-year old Sonny Gray (1-0, 2.11 ERA) will get the ball for the A’s on Wednesday night. Gray started the season with a pair of very solid outings before getting rocked by the Royals in his last start, where he was lucky to escape with a no decision.
