The A’s put first baseman/DH Mitch Moreland on the injured list this week. retroactive to May 15, with an inflamed costochondral junction of his left rib. Moreland exited a game last Friday with the injury. The veteran f has produced a modest .305 on-base percentage in 105 plate appearances this season — however, he has served as an important change-of-pace in the Athletics’ righty-heavy lineup.

The A’s have used the injured list 12 times this year. They used it just eight times last year, which was second fewest in the majors to Cleveland (4), and 18 times in 2019, which tied for second fewest.

Top prospect Luis Barrera was called up to fill Moreland’s roster spot. Rated as the top outfield prospect in the organization, the 25-year-old jumped with a hot start at Triple-A Las Vegas this season, slashing .349/.429/.558 with two home runs, a double, triple and seven RBIs over 11 games. The A’s could opt to utilize Barrera in a number of roles, as he brings experience playing all three outfield positions.

Ramón Laureano and Matt Olson are tied for the A’s team lead with 10 home runs and Oakland is one of six teams with two players with 10 or more home runs. Oakland is 21-3 when out-homering the opposition, 3-13 when out-homered.

It’s James Kaprielian (1-0, 1.80 ERA) on the mound here. Kaprielian, Oakland’s No. 10 prospect per MLB Pipeline was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas May 12 and made his first career start at Boston that night. He earned his first Major League win in the A’s 4-1 victory (5.0 ip, 4 h, 1 r, 1 er, 3 bb, 6 so) and hasn’t pitched since.

This will be the fourth appearance and second start of his career, his first against the Angels. He made his ML debut last year and had two relief appearances over five stints with Oakland and compiled a 7.36 ERA and .267 opponents’ batting average. His debut came after pitching in just 27 games over his first five professional seasons due to elbow problems. The Southern California native will be taking the mound near his hometown at Angel Stadium.

This will mark the first of 19 meetings this season between the Angels and A’s (10 at Angel Stadium & nine at the Coliseum). Last year, Oakland won the season series 6-4, marking the second straight year Angels lost season series vs. A’s.

Superstar and three-time AL MVP Mike Trout probably will not be winning a fourth award this season. He was favored to until injuring his right calf on Monday running the bases. Upon reaching third base, he knew something wasn’t right: “I thought I got hit by a line drive.” An MRI revealed a Grade 2 right calf strain and Trout will miss 6-8 weeks.

This will go down as another injury-shortened year for Trout, who after averaging 158 games per season from 2013-16 averaged just 129 games from 2017-19. Trout also missed seven games in the shortened 2020 season. Trout began the 2021 season with the best 30-game start of his illustrious career. He had slowed down of late but was still batting .333 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs through his first 36 games. His 1.090 OPS and 2.5 FanGraphs wins above replacement still led the majors.

Earlier this year, the Halos lost starting center fielder Dexter Fowler to a season-ending injury. Catcher Max Stassi remains on the injured list. Stassi has reportedly been feeling better recently after landing on the 7-day concussion injured list earlier this month but likely won’t be back Friday.

It’s lefty Jose Quintana (0-3) on the mound. Quintana gave up three runs over 4 1/3 innings on Sunday in a no-decision against the Red Sox. Quintana registered seven strikeouts, induced a season-high 15 swinging strikes and didn’t hand out a free pass. He gave up three hits, including a solo homer to Kevin Plawecki in the fifth inning. The 32-year-old hasn’t pitched beyond the fifth inning in a single start this year and owns an 8.53 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 41/19 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (seven starts) this season.

Quintana was signed to a one-year deal worth $8 million before the season and had a 3.73 ERA in 10 seasons before joining the club, including a 4.24 ERA in four seasons with the Cubs under now-Angels manager Joe Maddon. He also had a 3.32 ERA in 19 innings in Spring Training, but he has yet to see any of that success translate this season.
