Why Bet on Oakland?

The A’s are 5-19 (.208) in June, which is the lowest winning percentage in the majors. The only time in Oakland history the A’s finished with a winning percentage under .241 in any month (minimum 6 games) was in June of 1979 when they were 5-24 (.172). The A’s have now lost the first game of each of the last 11 series. Oakland is 21-12 when scoring first and 4-40 when the opponent scores first. They A’s have the second lowest winning percentage in the majors when the opponent scores first.

The A’s remain without closer Dany Jiménez, who is expected to resume throwing next week. Jiménez will begin plyometric activities within the next couple of days and then attempt to play catch if his range of motion is up to par. He landed on the injured list June 21 because of what was diagnosed as a right shoulder strain. Lou Trivino has converted two saves in his absence, with A.J. Puk and Zach Jackson both struggling to take advantage of their elevated roles in the Oakland bullpen.

Manager Puck Mark Kotsay acknowledged this week that second baseman Jed Lowrie’s left shoulder “has been an issue.” This stems from a collision at first base back on June 9 against the Guardians. Lowrie has been in and out of the A’s lineup since and is struggling big time. Kotsay said the team has discussed giving the veteran Lowrie a break via a 10-day IL stint.

Adrian Martínez (1-0, 0.00) will be called up to start for the A’s on Thursday. Martínez made his major league debut in a doubleheader against the Tigers in early May and delivered 5 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Acquired in the trade that sent Sean Manaea to the San Diego Padres, Martinez is 4-3 with a 5.63 ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas this year. He’s given up 67 hits in 63 innings with 23 walks and 73 strikeouts.

“Vegas is a tough place to pitch and if you look at the numbers it doesn’t tell the whole story,” Kotsay said. “Watching him pitch in Detroit, he threw the ball pretty well, threw strikes, threw the sinker, the change-up and had a slider to go with it. For us to give him another opportunity, we feel good about that.”

Why Bet on Seattle?

The Mariners place outfielder Taylor Trammell on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain. Trammell suffered the injury on Tuesday night against the Orioles while trying to leg out a grounder that went for a double play. It’s the second time that he has strained his right hamstring this season, and he missed several weeks while recovering from the first one. The 24-year-old outfielder had posted an encouraging .779 OPS in 32 games for Seattle since his promotion from Triple-A Tacoma in late May. Fellow outfielders Mitch Haniger and Kyle Lewis, first baseman Ty France and catcher Tom Murphy area also on the IL.

The team selected outfielder Marcus Wilson’s contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. The 25-year-old slashed .209/.336/.469 with 12 home runs and eight stolen bases across 238 plate appearances with Tacoma. He has the ability to play all three outfield spots and is expected to serve as a bench piece for Seattle.

Since June 1, M’s rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez leads AL rookies in fWAR (1.2), wRC+ (159), hits (29), runs (19), total bases (51) and times on base (42) and is tied for most home runs (5) with Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals. Rodriguez has gotten on base at a .372 clip, slugging .510 with an .882 OPS during the month. Rodríguez is 1 of 8 players in Major League history over their first 75 career games to record at least 75 hits, 10 home runs and 15 stolen bases.

It’s Logan Gilbert (8-3, 2.44 ERA) on the mound for Seattle. Gilbert was charged with three runs over 5 2/3 innings in Saturday’s win over the Angels. He also gave up nine hits, walked two, and struck out seven. The Angels utilized the long ball to get to Gilbert Shohei Ohtani took him deep in the bottom of the third and Kurt Suzuki hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. He was taken out of the game after David MacKinnon singled home Tyler Wade in the bottom of the sixth.

This will be Gilbert’s 5th career start against the Athletics and 1st this season. He is 0-0 with a 3.94 ERA (8 ER, 18.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts and 4 walks against them. Gilbert is a four-pitch pitcher, relying mostly on an electric four-seam fastball while mixing in a hard slider, curveball and a changeup that he uses mostly against left-handed hitters.
