MLB Odds and Picks: 4 Pitchers not to Consider into Week 6

MLB Odds and Picks: 4 Pitchers not to Consider into Week 6

There are many different factors to look at when wagering on baseball, not the least of which is the pitching matchup in any given game. There is money to be made if you can identify what looks to be a bad matchup with starting pitchers. To be fair, no player makes it to the MLB, especially as a starting pitcher, if they are not skilled, but some do better than others. Oftentimes, there is an element of luck required for a pitcher to have a great season, by which I mean that they get the run support from their offense and quality fielding from their supporting cast. It doesn’t play out that way for everyone, though, so we are going to look at 4 pitchers to avoid right now. These guys are not necessarily on the cellar dwelling teams, as that would be too easy, so let’s take a look at the MLB betting analysis for which pitchers to avoid.

MLB Pitchers to Avoid after Week 5 of the 2023 Season | MLB Lines by MyBookie

Zack Wheeler
Philadelphia Phillies

This pick may be seen by some as a little unfair given that Wheeler does have a winning record (3-2) this season, but there are still some red flags that need to be addressed. The biggest of those is his 4.26 ERA, as well as how he has played over the last week. During the last 7 days, Wheeler is 0-1 and has an ERA of 6.75, with just 5K during that time. That may be a sign that his current overall ERA is about to get worse, especially since the Phillies are heading in the wrong direction in the standings.

Logan Webb
San Francisco Giants

It has not been what anyone would describe as a terrible season for Webb, but he is one of those pitchers who does not seem to be getting a ton of help from his teammates. His ERA of 3.80 is not awful, but he has just not been able to translate that into wins, as he heads into Week 6 with a 2-5 record. If you look at his last 4 losses, you see that the Giants only managed a total of 7 runs when Webb was on the mound. That lack of run support can be a killer for a pitcher, so I would avoid him until that trend changes.

Max Scherzer
New York Mets

You cannot deny how good Scherzer has been in his time in the MLB, but this is a player struggling to stay healthy this season, which is having a negative impact on his performance. He currently has a 2-2 record and an ERA of 5.56, with just 20K. His last start came against the Colorado Rockies, and it was particularly alarming. The Mets lost 13-6 and Scherzer put up an abysmal 16.20 ERS. Until he gets healthy, we are avoiding him whenever he starts.

Justin Verlander
New York Mets

This is more of a wait and see as opposed to a total avoid scenario. Verlander finally made it into the lineup after recovering from injury, losing 2-0 to the Detroit Tigers after pitching 5 innings and posting a 3.60 ERA. Certainly not an awful performance, but at 40 years of age, you do have to wonder how much gas he has left in the tank. The Mets have gone all in on veteran pitchers, which could prove to be a genius move or a total disaster.
