MLB Odds and Picks: Pitchers to Avoid After Two Months of Action

MLB Odds and Picks: Pitchers to Avoid After Two Months of Action

We are now 8 weeks into the MLB season and the divisions are beginning to take shape, although we all know that things can change when you have a season that runs this long. Every player will go through a series of ups and downs over the course of a season, so blindly picking the same pitchers in every game will probably not work out that well for you. This is why we create a shortlist of pitchers to sit or start each week, in hopes that we can jump on those hot and cold trends to find pitchers to either start or sit. We have our start list already in place, so now let’s look at the MLB betting analysis for a few pitchers we don’t have a ton of confidence in for Week 9.

Ryan Weathers
San Diego Padres

The general consensus was that the San Diego Padres might well be the team to push the LA Dodgers in the NL West this season, but things are not playing out that way at the moment. The Padres are 5 games below .500 after 8 weeks and are having problems getting runs home. That does not help their pitching staff, with Weathers in particular having some issues. He is sitting at 1-3 on the season with an ERA of 4.34. The Padres have lost 4 of the last 5 games that he has started and could be in trouble again on Tuesday night.

Julio Teheran
Milwaukee Brewers

You have to feel a certain level of sympathy for the Brewers, as they are having some serious injury issues in the early part of the season. Those issues have forced them to go out and recruit, with Julio Teheran the latest to join the ball club. While he pitched 5 solid innings, giving up just 1 earned run, in his first start, I’m not so sure that he is a long-term solution for the Brewers. He especially might have some issues with the hard-hitting Toronto Blue Jays, who he will start against on Wednesday night.

Taijuan Walker
Philadelphia Philles

Slowly but surely, the Phillies are losing ground to the Atlanta Braves at the top of the NL East and are now 4 games below .500. That gap could grow a little larger when they head to New York to face the Mets for a series this week. Thursday night will see Taijuan Walker take the mound for the Phillies. He comes in with a respectable 4-2 record, although his 5.57 ERA leaves a little to be desired. That ERA is actually at 6.75 in road games this season, which is why I think he might be one to sit this week.

Roansy Contreras
Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the surprise teams in the opening weeks of the season, but we all wondered if they would be able to maintain that early pace. They have not, and they are now 2 games below .500 and slipping down the standings. The team as a whole has gone cold, but perhaps none colder than Contreras, who has now failed to pick up a win in his last 5 starts, going 0-3 in that stretch. He only lasted 2 innings in his last outing and looks to be losing confidence with each progressive trip to the mound.
