Why Bet on Pittsburgh?
Monitor the status of third baseman David Freese after he was unavailable for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals due to a right forearm contusion. He’s considered day-to-day. The Bucs made a trade on Monday in landing SS Adeiny Hechavarria and cash considerations from the Rays for RHP Matt Seelinger. The Pirates have won nine of their last 12 games played in Colorado, dating back to 7/27/14. In their last 12 games at Coors Field, the Bucs have hit .326 (151-for-463) with 28 doubles, 18 home runs and 88 runs scored (7.3 per game avg.). The Pirates have homered in nine straight games played in Colorado. Dating back to July 6, the Pirates lead all National League teams with a .277 batting average and only Washington (.810) have a higher OPS than the Bucs (.796). Since the All-Star break, the Bucs are second in the league with a .813 OPS (sixth in the Majors) and are second to only Baltimore (.300) with a .285 batting average. It’s Jameson Taillon (8-8, 3.74) on the mound. Taillon allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over 6.2 innings in a win over the Cubs on Tuesday. He flashed more dominance than the two strikeouts would suggest, inducing 14 swinging strikes on 89 pitches. The extent of the damage against Taillon came on one swing, with Javier Baez launching a three-run homer in the fourth. The 26-year-old Taillon hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since May 22, posting a 3.18 ERA over his last 73.2 innings. Why Bet on Colorado?
Nolan Arenado went 3-for-5 with a go-ahead solo home run in the 11th inning of the Rockies’ win over the Brewers on Sunday. Arenado is hitting just .271 (16-for-59) since the All-Star break, but he’s homered six times and racked up 13 RBI during that stretch. He reached base three times in this one, courtesy of a pair of singles and a walk, before blasting a go-ahead solo home run off Brewers closer Corey Knebel in the 11th inning. The 27-year-old is hitting.306/.390/.590 with 74 runs scored, 29 home runs and 81 RBI in 105 games. On Sunday, shortstop Trevor Story hit his 24th home run of the season in the fifth inning, in his 110th game, matching his total from last season (145 games). It was his third straight game with a homer for the third time in his career, first since 7/22-7/24, 2016 (3). He finished the season with 7 home runs and 18 RBI in 7 games against the Brewers and became the 5th player in Rockies history with 7+ home runs against a non-divisional opponent in a season, first since Todd Helton in 1999 (7 vs. Montreal).
Outfielder Charlie Blackmon was out of Monday’s lineup against the Pirates but he’s not thought to be injured. David Dahl goes the start in center field. Blackmon should play Tuesday.
Colorado needs a starter here because it put RHP Antonio Senzatela on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 3, with right shoulder inflammation. Senzatela has pitched well in each of his last two starts and the shoulder ailment isn’t considered serious. The Rockies had been considering bringing back Chad Bettis as a reliever, but he now seems likely to come back as a starter.
So, we’ll assume it’s Bettis who will be activated off the DL and go here. Bettis made his third rehab start for Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 2, working six innings and giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. Over his 17 starts with the Rockies prior to landing on the DL with a blister on his right middle finger, Bettis supplied a 5.10 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 95.1 innings.
