Yankees versus Astros Series Analysis
Both teams have huge leads in their divisional races. The Yankees lead the second-place Blue Jays by 11.5 games, while the Astros have a 10-game lead over the Texas Rangers. The Yankees have been on a tear all season, while Houston overcame a slow start to jump all over the rest of the West.
The Astros and the Yankees have arguably the top two lineups in baseball. The Yankees are led by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Judge is the leading candidate for the American League MVP award this season. The Astros are led by Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez. These two teams can score runs in bunches, and can give opposing pitching staff nightmares.
This could be a good series to place a few wagers on. We’ll see some great pitching matchups, and these two teams will be fighting for supremacy in the American League.
Friday Night Fireworks
We can’t wait to see the Friday night matchup. The ageless wonder, Justin Verlander, takes the hill for the Houston Astros. He’ll be opposed by young fireballer Luis Severino. Verlander, who’s coming off of Tommy John surgery, is 8-3 with a 2.30 ERA this season. He could be the top candidate for the American League Cy Young Award this season. He’s looked amazing this season, considering that he’s 39 years old.
Severino has also recovered from arm surgery and has also recovered well. He’s 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA. In his 66 innings pitched, he’s struck out 80 hitters. He also has a 1.06 WHIP, which is a tremendous number.
This should be a phenomenal pitching matchup between two of the top starters in the American League.
The Next 2
On Saturday, Christian Javier will take on Gerrit Cole. Javier is 4-3 with a 3.07 ERA. Cole, who has been dominant over the past few seasons, is 6-1 with a 3.24 ERA. Cole has 101 strikeouts on the season. With the exception of a couple of bad outings, Cole has been his usual self.
Sunday’s series finale will see Jose Urquidy face off against Nestor Cortes. Cortes has come out of nowhere to have a great start to the season for the Yankees. Urquidy has very good stuff, and can be very hard to hit at times.
Potential Playoff Matchup
If the season were to end tomorrow, these two would be on a collision course to meet in the ALCS. The Yankees have looked like the best team in baseball for most of the season. They have the total package, as they have a great starting staff, powerful lineup, and a stellar bullpen.
We’ll see if the Astros have what it takes to win the series from the Yankees, or if New York will show everyone that they’re the class of the American league.
