Most teams live or die by what their starting rotation is able to deliver, and that is why the Miami Marlins and the Pittsburgh Pirates are two teams heading in very different directions right now. It’s going to be interesting to see of the current pitching trends hold true when they meet for a 33-game series in Pittsburgh to start the week. Game 2 of the series will go on Tuesday night and our sportsbook is listing the Pirated as heavy betting favorites for the match.

The Pirates (21-22) got off to a very wobbly start to the season, but all signs seem to be pointing to them turning the ship around. That all begins with getting their pitching to where it needs to be, which is exactly what they did in a 3-game sweep of the Mets. Cole, Burnett, and Liriano were all overpowering in their starts, and were all aided by an offense that supplied much more run support than was actually needed. No-one in Pittsburgh is getting too carried away just yet, but that series win was a lot more like what we all expected from the Pirates this season. They have a chance to really build some momentum against a struggling Miami Marlins team. Jeff Locke (2-2, 5.28 ERA) will get the start on Tuesday night. Locke has not logged a win since his second start of the season, and will be looking at this game as an opportunity to rectify that.To say that the Miami Marlins (18-27) are struggling is actually putting things a little mildly. They have looked pretty awful for the majority of the season, and there is a lot of talk that things are far from harmonious behind the scenes. Adding to the problems is the fact that two of their starters – Henderson Alvarez and Matt Latos – are now out through injury. If there is a bright side in all of this, it’s that the Marlins actually played quite well in a series win over the Orioles, and have now won two games in a row. The downside is that there is actually no word on who will take to the mound for Miami on Tuesday, as injuries have left that up in the air for now.

Consider This Before Placing Your Bets

This is an ideal opportunity for the Pirates, as they are facing a team that is a real mess at the moment. They will be looking to get the sweep here, and I certainly think they will take second game of this series on Tuesday night.SourcesESPN.com (http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/31068/jeff-locke)FoxSports.com (http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/miami-marlins-team)
