Why Bet on NY Yankees?

Some good and bad news on the Yankees’ injury front. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) is still “a ways away,” per Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Stanton resumed some light running workouts late last week at Yankee Stadium, but he will not travel with the club for its trip to Baltimore and Toronto. Mid-September is likely his earliest return.

Boone added that he expects shortstop Gleyber Torres to come off the injured list Saturday or Sunday. There was some thought that he might be ready for Friday’s doubleheader, but the Yankees will give him at least one more day of rest and rehab. Torres has been on the injured list since August 21 because of Grade 1 strains in his left quad and left hamstring.

Struggling catcher Gary Sanchez was out of the lineup Thursday but simply for rest. Sanchez is hitting just .134/.253/.366 with six homers and 14 RBI. He should be back in there Friday, although probably not both games.

“It’s a little bit with pitch recognition,” Boone said of what he sees in Sanchez’s struggles. “His timing’s a little bit off where he’s not recognizing the ball well enough early to make really quality swing decisions … We’ve got to get him rolling. Especially with some guys down he’s an important, important guy for us … he was kind of building some momentum.”

It’s good-looking young right-hander Deivi Garcia scheduled for this game. Garcia dazzled in his big league debut against the Mets last Sunday, allowing just one unearned run on four hits over six strong innings. The 21-year-old punched out six and didn’t walk a batter. He was hurt by his defense, as Jeff McNeil reached on an error to begin the sixth inning and scored on an RBI single by Dominic Smith. Garcia threw 75 pitches in the game — 51 of them for strikes.

Garcia was sent back to the team’s alternate site after his brilliant debut Sunday, but he’s eligible to return Friday as the “29th man” again.

Why Bet on Baltimore?

The Orioles have a nice advantage as they were off Thursday, but they enter having lost six of eight following Wednesday’s 9-4 home defeat vs. the Mets. Renato Nunez was removed from the game with an apparent injury. Nunez looked a little gimpy while running out a grounder in the fifth inning. He initially remained in the game but was removed after the sixth. It’s being called a sore hamstring and Nunez is day-to-day. On Tuesday, Nunez homered twice.

Also Wednesday, DH José Iglesias extended his hitting streak to 10 games after singling to lead off the third inning; he’s averaging .413 (19-for-46) with five doubles, seven RBI, and four runs scored in that streak. Iglesias also singled in the ninth for his seventh straight game with multiple hits. That’s the longest streak by an Oriole since Vladimir Guerrero (5/14-21/2011). The Orioles record is 10 straight multi-hit games, done twice (Rich Dauer, 7/18-28/78 and Bob Nieman, 5/4-22/58).

It’s also the longest overall multi-hit streak in the majors this season. The Orioles have four different players (INF Hanser Alberto – 14, INF José Iglesias – 12, Nunez – 10, and OF Anthony Santander – 10) who have recorded double digit multi-hit games this season.

It’s Alex Cobb (1-3) on the bump here. The Trade Deadline rumors surrounding Cobb turned out to be just that. He will be making his eighth start of the season. Cobb struggled in last Saturday’s loss to the Blue Jays, surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits over his four innings of work. The right-hander walked two and struck out two.

The Jays jumped on him for a pair of runs in the opening inning on a two-run single by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., then they tacked on three more (one unearned) in the fourth. Cobb owns a 4.33 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 35 1/3 innings.

He’ll be making his first start of the season against the Yankees. For his career, he has gone 7-4 with a 2.92 ERA (35 ER/108.0 IP) in 18 starts against the Yankees. In 11 career home starts against the Yanks, Bombers, Cobb has gone 5-2 with a 2.94 ERA (22 ER/67.1 IP).
