Nets and Clippers start the season 2-0

Two teams, one from the West and one from the East, showed they have what it takes to challenge the mighty Lakers. Both the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets easily handled their first two opponents in this shortened season.

Under Tyronn Lue, the Clippers appear to have more energy in their step. LAC had no trouble in a revenge match against the Nugget and then in a battle against the Lakers.

The Clippers beat the Nuggets, who bested them in the Western Conference Semifinals in the Orlando bubble in September, 121-108. The name of the game versus Denver was defense. LAC held the Nuggets to 30.6% shooting from three.

Lue’s squad shot 55.4% from the field and 50% from three. In the 116-109 win against the Lakers, the Clippers shot just 47.3% from the field and 35% from three. But Tyronn’s team held the Lakers to 46.9% from the field and 31% from three.

Behind stunning scoring from their two superstars, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Nets dominated the rival Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors in their first two games. Durant and Irving were the two high scorers for the Nets in both wins.

KD and Kyrie were unstoppable against the Celtics. What was more impressive, though, is how Brooklyn held Boston to 37.8% from the field and 29.6% from three. The Warriors shot 37.4% from the field and 30.3% from three.

The defense held the Celtics and Warriors to under 100 points, which is stunning considering that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown play for Boston while Steph Curry is back for Golden State.

Lakers maintain favoritism, and Bucks and Nets become solid second choices

Although the Lakers are 1-1 after their first couple of games, their odds dropped from +275 to +200. The Milwaukee Bucks’ odds also dropped from +550 to +500 while the Clippers odds dropped from +650 to +600.

No team, though, made as big of a move towards favorite status as the Brooklyn Nets. What must have surprised so many basketball handicappers was how Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving not only dominated the scoring but how the other players gelled so well with the two superstars.

If the Nets can play defense like they did against the Warriors and Celtics for the entire season, they will leapfrog the Bucks and become the outright favorite to win the Eastern Conference and challenge the Lakers.

Have a great week!
