The Dallas Mavericks will play the National Anthem

Mark Cuban seems to be all over the place. First, he said that he was the one who made the decision to not play the National Anthem during home games. Then, after the league said that all teams would play the Anthem before games, Cuban said he made the decision based on what he was hearing from the community.

The Dallas Mavericks owner then said the Mavericks had “no problem” playing the National Anthem. He also said the Mavs would start playing the National Anthem before tip-off at home games.

If you’re confused, don’t worry. The bottom line is that Cuban wanted to be different, the league said you can’t be different, and so now, the Mavs will play the National Anthem before home games. 

Are the Nets average? Maybe, not

After a third straight loss, and their fourth in their last five games, Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash asked players to look inward and decide what type of team they wanted to be. Kyrie Irving said Brooklyn looked very “average”.

Both Kyrie’s and Nash’s statements appeared to do the trick. The Nets blasted the tough Indiana Pacers 104-94 in their very next game. The surprising thing about the win? Brooklyn beat a good defensive team by playing defense.

Even though Brooklyn shot just 29% from behind the three-point line, the Nets won. It goes to show that the offensive-minded Nets, Brooklyn is the top-scoring team in the NBA, can play defense if they put their minds to it.

If the Nets continue to play top-shelve defense, they can win the title. No team has three scoring options that match Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden. Maybe, the +350 odds on Brooklyn to win the title are fair. 

Lakers remain underlay favorites, Sixers and Jazz offer value

The +200 on the Lakers make them a play against. As long as LeBron James and Anthony Davis remain healthy, the Lakers should be the chalk. But at +200, they’re not worth backing.

The Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz offer better odds and are stronger at a position where the Lakers are weak. Philadelphia center Joel Embiid may win the NBA MVP this season.

Jazz center Rudy Gobert is one of the best defensive centers in the league. Gobert’s offense has improved and the Jazz now have one of the top backcourts in the NBA in Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley.

That’s not to say the Lakers won’t repeat. It is to say that +200 makes Los Angeles an underlay. It’s too early to back the chalk when we can get much better odds on dominating teams like the Jazz and Sixers.
