Suns and Sixers lead the Western and Eastern Conferences

So far this season, the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers are dominating. Both the Suns and Sixers are 5-1 heading into the week. Why have Phoenix and Philadelphia become two of the most feared teams in the NBA?

When the Detroit Pistons won titles in the 1980s, or even the Boston Celtics in that decade, they did so with their defense. Sure, Larry Bird could throw up 50 in any game, but if Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale didn’t lock down on their opponent’s best inside players, the Celtics often lost.

The Suns and Sixers are playing the best defense of any teams in the NBA. Phoenix allows 98.7 points per game. That ranks first. Opponents shoot 45% from the field against the Suns and just 30% from the three-point line.

Because Phoenix shoots 37.9% from three, it’s easy to see the strategy. Hold your opponent to a ridiculously low percentage from three while you allow Devin Booker to shoot with abandon.

Philadelphia holds opponents to 35.7% from three. The Sixers hold their rivals to 41.4% from the field while shooting 46.9% from the field. Philadelphia allows 103.4 points per, which ranks third in the NBA

Not only do the Sixers and Suns play excellent defense but they also have dominating players on offense. Joel Embiid is the best center in the league and the Suns’ Devin Booker is one of the best shooting guards in the NBA.

Both teams have solid starting fives and both teams have decent benches. Don’t be surprised that if Philadelphia and Phoenix continue to play defense like this throughout the season, they end up as one of the top two seeds in their conference playoffs.

Nuggets and Raptors starting out cold

Teams that start the season off on a sour note have ten less games to make up losses. That’s bad news for squads like the Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors.

Even though Nikola Jokic dominates, Denver’s defense is horrendous. For the Raptors, Pascal Siakam doesn’t appear to have improved from last season.

Among the two squads, Denver has the best chance of turning it around. Jokic can play with Anthony Davis, Luka Doncic, and the other best players in the Western Conference. He’ll will the Nuggets to a few wins.

Toronto could be in some trouble. When Fred VanVleet leads your team in scoring, you got problems.

Have a great week!
