Although it’s the NBA offseason, things haven’t stopped happening. The 2020 Orlando bubble showed that the National Basketball Association could finish a season under extreme circumstances. The 2020-2021 NBA Season will show if the brand lost some of its power due to the Year of COVID. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants a pre-Christmas start

On Monday, Silver spoke to NBA team executives about how important it is to start the new season before Christmas. To his credit, Silver didn’t blink an eye when stating that the league could lose hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue if they don’t start the new season before December 25.

If Silver is correct, and there’s no reason to believe he isn’t, it proves the bubble idea, although a way to crown the Lakers as champions, didn’t help build the NBA as a brand. In fact, it may have hurt. Some believe the slogans on the back of jerseys took away from the play on the court.

But slogans on jerseys and social injustice discussions could have nothing to do with why the NBA wants to start before Christmas. The National Basketball Association often wraps up their season in late June, early July.

An early October NBA Finals was something out of the ordinary. It threw sports fans off big time. Not only did the NBA compete with the start of the NFL Season, but they had to go against the most blisteringly, vitriolic, U.S. Presidential Election in history.

No wonder the National Basketball Association’s television ratings dipped. Even LeBron James and Jimmy Butler, two of the best players in the league, couldn’t save a Finals that had to compete with so many other attention grabbing events.  

Coach joins players as assistant, D’Antoni in Brooklyn with Nash

Steve Nash, the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, hired Mike D’Antoni as an assistant coach. The D’Antoni-Nash combination is one of the most devastating in the history of the league. The pair hooked up in Phoenix and made the Suns the highest-scoring team in the NBA.

During the Suns days, though, one of them, Nash, was the floor general while the other was the general on the sidelines. Neither will step onto the court this season. But that doesn’t mean D’Antoni’s and Nash’s run and gun system won’t work in Brooklyn.

The Nets have a couple of players who could turn the franchise around, point-guard Kyrie Irving and the great Kevin Durant. KD can play any position on the court while Irving is as good as it gets at the point. 

If Irving and Durant gel and learn the system, the Nets could challenge the Bucks, Raptors, Celtics, and Heat in the East. Keep that in mind when you start handicapping.

Morey hire doesn’t move needle on Sixers to win the NBA Championship

The Philadelphia 76ers hired Daryl Morey as their GM last week. Although the Morey hire made waves because of a tweet Daryl made over a year ago, it did nothing to bolster Philly backers’ belief that the 76ers can win the title this season.

Philadelphia remains a +3000 underdog to get sized for rings. Morey will work with new head coach Doc Rivers to get the current roster to play better for sure. Daryl said he loved the roster, but let’s be real. 

The Sixers don’t have a true point-guard and until they get one, they appear to be Joel Embiid and some good players. So, yes, they’ll be better, but Philly has a long way to go before challenging the best in the Eastern Conference.
