Brooklyn leads 2-0. The teams last met on March 17 at Indiana and it was a 124-115 final score for the Nets. James Harden had a triple-double of 40 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds. In the fourth quarter alone, he had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists as the Nets outscored the Pacers 35-24 in the fourth. The Nets were without fellow All-Stars Kyrie Irving (groin) and Kevin Durant (hamstring) and newcomer Blake Griffin (knee). Malcolm Brogdon led Indiana with 24 points, while Domantas Sabonis had a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Dating to last season, Brooklyn has won three straight matchups against Indiana for the first time since they swept the three-game series during the 2012-13 season.

Still without superstar James Harden, the Nets became the first Eastern Conference team to clinch a playoff spot on Tuesday with a 116-103 win at the Toronto Raptors – Brooklyn outscored the Raptors by 16 in the fourth quarter. Trailing 90-84 early in the fourth period, Brooklyn used a game-turning 16-2 run to grab control.

“It was a night where our connectivity really showed because Toronto put us under duress. When things weren’t going our way we could have started to splinter, but our guys stuck with it,” said Brooklyn coach Steve Nash, whose Nets made 13 of 19 shots in the fourth quarter.

Kevin Durant returned to the starting lineup and was held to just 17 points but added 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Durant was one of eight rotation players to score in double figures. He recorded multiple steals and multiple blocks for just the second time this year. Durant has averaged 25.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks since returning from his three-game absence.

Kyrie Irving had a bit of an off game with just nine points as he was 3-for-13 shooting. Kyrie had scored at least 12 points in every game this season and his three shot makes were also a season low. He still is averaging 21.5 points, 8.8 assists, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game over that past four.

Blake Griffin had 17 points and six rebounds and has averaged 14.2 points (on 52.0 percent shooting from the field), 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game across his last five contests.

Harden — who is shooting and doing strength work — still has “a ways to go,” according to Nash, before he will return. The Nets are also without Nicolas Claxton, who has missed five games while in the league’s COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Pacers were embarrassed 133-112 at home by Portland on Tuesday; the Blazers entered on a five-game skid. Portland’s Anfernee Simons made his first nine 3-pointers on the way to 27 points. Simons fell two 3s short of Damian Lillard’s franchise record and became the first NBA player to open a game with nine consecutive 3s since Klay Thompson made 10 straight on Jan. 21, 2019. The visitors finished with a 67-44 rebounding advantage and shot 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) from deep. Indiana surrendered 20 offensive rebounds which led to 21 second-chance points for Portland.

“It was the threes,” Pacers coach Nate Bjorkgren said. “We needed to do a better job of contesting better there. The glass got away from us there as well.”

Indiana was missing five players: Domantas Sabonis (back), Myles Turner (right foot), T.J. Warren (left foot) as well as backups Goga Bitadze (left ankle) and Jeremy Lamb (left knee). Warren is done for the season and Turner is out a while. The others could play Thursday.

Oshae Brissett was a bright spot Tuesday with 18 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks and two steals – he led the team in each category. The former Syracuse standout has started each of Indiana’s last five games and has surpassed the 30-minute mark in each of the last four with the Pacers so banged up in the frontcourt. Brissett is averaging 15.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game in that five-game stretch.

The Pacers have lost 16 games this season in which they have held a lead during the fourth quarter (they didn’t on Tuesday). Indiana is 8-9 this season in games decided by five points or fewer including a 4-6 record at home. The Pacers lead the NBA in fast break points with an average of 16.5 points per game and 14.2 percent of its offensive output comes in transition.
