The TexasOklahoma rivalry in basketball isn’t near as heated as in football, but the No. 13 Longhorns surely will be extra motivated on Tuesday to avoid the season sweep vs. the hated and No. 12 Sooners, who will be home favorites on the NCAAB odds. Those rankings may change on Monday.

On Jan. 26, Oklahoma was ranked No. 24 when it won 80-79 at Texas, which was No. 5 then but missing key players in COVID protocols as well as coach Shaka Smart. Austin Reaves scored 23 points and made two free throws with 18.3 seconds left that proved to be the difference. Kai Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Andrew Jones scored 13 for Texas. Starters Jericho Sims and Courtney Ramey, and key reserve Brock Cunningham were all out. Three more Longhorns fouled out and Texas was down to just five scholarship players by the final play.

Texas (13-5) won its second in a row Saturday, 70-55 over visiting TCU. R.J. Nembhard scored 15 points to lead TCU, but was mostly held in check after making four of his first five shots in the opening minutes. Center Kevin Samuel, who averages 9.4 points, managed just one shot in the first half and that didn’t come until the final two minutes of the half. Samuel finished with three points. The Horned Frogs had 15 turnovers, leading to 19 Texas points.

“You’ve got to sustain and you’ve got to finish,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “We’ve got to find a way to execute better throughout. We had a two-point game and we hadn’t even played that well.”

Junior guard Andrew Jones registered a game-high 19 points to lead UT. The Longhorns used a 13-1 run over a four-minute stretch midway through the second half to pull away for the important league win. Jones had 13 of his 19 points in the opening half and converted 9-of-16 field goals in 27 minutes of action. He has reached double figures in scoring in 13 consecutive games, including all 11 league contests this season.

Senior guard Matt Coleman III posted 10 of his 15 points in the second half and knocked down 6-of-8 field goals, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, in 34 minutes. Freshman forward Greg Brown tallied 13 points while hitting 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and grabbed 6 rebounds in 30 minutes, and senior forward Jericho Sims added 11 points and 8 boards in 28 minutes.

Royce Hamm Jr. not play against TCU, perhaps a punitive move by Coach Shaka Smart caused by the senior’s Twitter outburst after last Tuesday’s win at Kansas State. UT posted a +6 rebound margin (37-31) and improved to 9-4 this season when outrebounding its opponent. Texas improved to 261-56 at the Erwin Center in the last 19 seasons (dating back to the start of the 2002-03 season). UT is 70-30 at home during the Smart era (7-4 this season).

The NCAA Tournament selection committee has UT as a No. 4 seed in its first mock bracket, which was unveiled Saturday.

Oklahoma won its second in a row Saturday as well, 91-90 in double overtime at No. 14 West Virginia. The Sooners couldn’t hold on to a 66-57 lead with six minutes left in regulation and had to depend on Austin Reaves to pull this one out. Reaves went 10 of 20 from the floor in his second game back since missing two games while in COVID-19 protocols. He also had nine rebounds and seven assists.

Oklahoma is the only school WVU has not beaten in football since moving to the Big 12 and they now have lost four straight basketball games to the Sooners, who lead the head-to-head series with the Mountaineers 14-9.

West Virginia’s three-game winning streak came to an end. The Mountaineers made just 7 of 24 3-pointers (29%) and 11 of 21 free throws (52%). West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said his players were tired after returning late from a win at No. 7 Texas Tech last Tuesday.

“The bottom line is we couldn’t guard them,” Huggins said. “We couldn’t keep them out of the lane all day and it was a simple ball screen. We tried to switch it. We tried to double it and we couldn’t stay in front of them.”

With his 3-pointer with just more than 13 minutes remaining, Brady Manek passed Tim Heskett for fifth place in career 3-pointers with the 216th of his career at OU. Manek started at center for the second consecutive game as Sooners coach Lon Kruger opted to go with a smaller lineup, sticking with four guards and using Manek in place of Kur Kuath. Manek has scored at least nine points in each of the Sooners’ last four games.
