2019 March Madness Sweet 16 Betting Guide

South Region Semifinals

  • When: March 28, 2019
  • Where: KFC Yum Center, Louisville, KY

Purdue vs Tennessee

Action’s gone onto Tennessee so that the Volunteers are now -1.5 favorites after opening as -1 favorites. Tennessee has yet to cover the spread in the NCAA Tournament. They’re actually 0-3 ATS in their last 3 games.

Purdue has played like one of the top teams in the tournament. The Boilermakers beat Villanova 87-61 in their second round game. If you’re looking to back the Boilermakers against the spread, you might as well take them on the moneyline at +105.

Oregon vs Virginia

Virginia’s favored by 8 ½. That’s way too many points to give to a team that’s won 10 straight and has covered in 10 straight. UVA is only 2-3 ATS in their last 5. Oregon looks like a slam dunk against the spread. Should we consider backing the Ducks at +345 on the moneyline? Probably, because Oregon’s playing better than any team in the tournament right now.

West Region Semifinals

  • When: March 28, 2019
  • Where: Honda Center, Anaheim, CA

Florida State vs Gonzaga

Most will look at how Florida State dominated a good Murray State Racers team 90-62 and believe they can cover as +7.5 dogs. Although Florida State is a much better team than what Gonzaga has faced in the tournament so far, the Seminoles were flattered by how Murray State battled them. Gonzaga won’t play an up and down game like that. Expect the Zags to dominate. They represent value as -7.5 favorites.

Texas Tech vs Michigan

Michigan’s a -1.5 favorite. The Wolverines probably should be favored, but Texas Tech has an edge in three-point shooting. Because the Red Raiders are slightly better from behind the arc, and both teams are excellent on defense, Texas Tech deserves the nod on the moneyline. Right now, those odds are +105, but by tip-off the Red Raiders could be favored. So, take those odds as soon as you can if you like them.

East Region Semifinals

  • When: March 29, 2019
  • Where: Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C.

LSU vs Michigan State

LSU struggled against Yale. They needed a close to last second shot by Tremont Waters to beat Maryland. The Tigers are going to have all sorts of trouble battling a Michigan State squad that dominated rival Minnesota 70-50 in the second round. MSU should cover the 6 points.

Virginia Tech vs Duke

Virginia Tech beat Duke during the regular season. Zion Williamson didn’t play for the Dookies. Still, it’s hard to see the Blue Devils covering as -7 favorites. VA Tech should keep the game much closer than that. The Hokies offer good value on the moneyline at +270. If you believe Duke fails, backing Virginia Tech on the moneyline could be the way to go.

Midwest Region Semifinals

  • When: March 29, 2019
  • Where: Sprint Center, Kansas City, MO

Auburn vs North Carolina

Those who like Auburn at +5 might be putting too much emphasis on how they dominated Kansas 89-75. The Jayhawks were a false 4-seed while Auburn struggled in their first round game, only beating New Mexico State by 2. North Carolina held Washington to 59 points in their second round game. The Tar Heels scored 81, which means they blew out one of the top teams from the Pac 12. UNC has a huge edge in the paint with Luke Maye. They’ll cover the 5 points against Auburn on Friday.

Houston vs Kentucky

Houston +135 on the moneyline might be the best play of any games in the Sweet 16. The Cougars have covered in two straight against Georgia State and Ohio State. What’s really impressive? Houston beat Georgia State 84-58 and then dominated Ohio State 74-59. The Cougars are hitting on all cylinders. Beating Kentucky won’t be easy, but the Coogs  can do it.
