NCAA Tournament Underdogs Worth Betting On

Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State may have lost in the Big Ten Championship game, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still rolling. Micah Shrewsberry is garnering national attention from the media and finds himself on multiple fan bases’ wish lists to replace their departed head coaches. Guard Jalen Pickett has become a household name and bonafide superstar with his stat sheet-stuffing box scores this season, and a matchup with Texas A&M seems like a find opportunity to make some more noise.

The Aggies are a good team, but they struggled on the offensive side of the court and are coming off of a thorough whooping at the hands of Alabama. Wade Taylor IV is a really good point guard, and his supporting cast is no joke either. The question here is whether or not the Nittany Lions defense can keep that Aggies perimeter from going off. Penn State is going to score, but can they stop their opponents?

Oral Roberts Golden Eagles

The owners of the nation’s longest active winning streak are second on our list of teams to watch in the first round. Oral Roberts has won 17 consecutive games and faces off against Duke on Thursday. While the Blue Devils are also hot, having won the ACC Conference Tournament, Oral Roberts has an advantage in this contest which is experience. Max Abmas and Coach Paul Mills were both a part of the Cinderella team that made a run to the sweet 16 in the 2021 tournament.

Abmas, the two-time Summit Conference player of the year, is once again averaging better than 22 points a game to go along with four rebounds and four assists. In his three games during the 2021 tournament, he averaged nearly 27 points per contest and shot 40% from beyond the three-point line. He also doesn’t have to do it alone as Connor Vanover is a quality big man who was once in the SEC with Arkansas, and Issac McBride is also an All-Summit league performer.

Virginia Commonwealth Rams

This one might be a bit of a stretch, as VCU needed the automatic qualifier to get into the field. That said, they dispatched the rest of the Atlantic 10 with relative ease behind a defense that is incredibly intense.

Of course, in Saint Mary’s they face an opponent that is equally stingy on defense and the Rams are not particularly gifted when on the offensive side of the court. Ace Baldwin and Brandon Johns are capable, but neither is going to put thirty points on the board in all likelihood. However, the “Havoc” style defense that Mike Rhoades deploys will keep VCU in any game and could make them a nice Cinderella pick.
