Expert ATS Picks for 2018 March Madness Sweet 16

No. 11 Loyola-Chicago Ramblers (30-5) vs No. 7 Nevada Wolf Pack (29-7)

  • When: Thursday, March 22, 2018, 7:07 PM ET
  • Where: Philips Arena, Atlanta, Georgia
  • 2018 March Madness Sweet 16 Odds: Nevada -1.5 (Over/Under at 143.5)
Make no mistake about it college basketball bettors, 11th-seeded Loyola-Chicago is dangerous with a capital ‘D’. First, the Ramblers upset Miami 64-62 in their opener and then they got past Tennessee 63-62 in the second round in what amounted to two of the biggest upsets this tournament. Seventh-seeded Nevada has also been very good in beating Texas 87-83 in overtime in their opener and then getting past a very good Cincinnati squad 75-73 in the second round. For this Sweet 16 matchup, I’m thinking Nevada is about to bring a halt to Loyola-Chicago’s fairytale tournament run because of their far superior offense. I know Loyola-Chicago is elite defensively and that they’ve already beaten two teams they were supposed to lose to, but right now, Nevada just has the look of a team that is locked in and will avoid the upset in this affair while extending their own chances to pull off another upset in the lite Eight. I know the Ramblers are 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games and 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games, but Nevada has been offering a lot of value as a team that has gone 11-4 ATS over their last 15 games and 18-7-1 ATS over their last 26 games following a straight-up win. Nevada wins and advances. Pick: Nevada -1.5

No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies (22-12) vs No. 3 Michigan Wolverines (30-7)

  • When: Thursday, March 22, 2018, 7:37 PM ET
  • Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
  • 2018 March Madness Sweet 16 Odds: Michigan -3 (Over/Under at 134.5)
Seventh-seeded Texas A&M got past a tough Providence squad 73-69 in their opener and that’s all fine and well, but it was their 86-65 trouncing of North Carolina in the second round that was a real eye-opener. Third-seeded Michigan man-handled overmatched Montana in their opener, but should never have beaten Houston 64-63 in the second round, despite the fact that they somehow managed to survive. Unfortunately, no I just don’t see the Wolverines getting past Texas A&M in this Sweet 16 matchup as the Aggies hold the edge in scoring, free throw shooting, rebounding and bench production and have a trio of players that can flat-out score the rock in T.J. Starks, Tyler Davis, and D.J. Hogg. The Aggies 5-1 SU over their last six games, 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS win and an identical 5-2 ATS in their last seven neutral site games. Texas A&M should be your betting pick for the 2018 March Madness Sweet 16 against Michigan. Despite going 5-2 ATS in their last seven non-conference games, the Wolverines are just 0-3-1 ATS in their last four games against teams from the SEC. I’ve got Texas A&M not only covering the chalk as 3-point dogs in this one but doing so by winning outright! Pick: Texas A&M +3

No. 9 Florida State Seminoles (22-11) vs No. 4 Gonzaga Bulldogs (32-4)

  • When: Thursday, March 22, 2018, 10:07 PM ET
  • Where: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California
  • 2018 March Madness Sweet 16 Odds: Gonzaga -5.5 (Over/Under at 154)
Ninth-seeded Florida State spanked eighth-seeded Missouri 67-54 in their opener before walloping top-seeded Xavier 75-70 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicates, in the second round. Fourth-seeded Gonzaga got past 13th-seeded North Carolina-Greensboro 68-64 in their opener but really struggled in doing so. The Bulldogs then got past Ohio State 90-84 in the second round, but again, they didn’t look like conquerors in that contest either. Now, for this Sweet 16 showdown, I’ve got the more athletic – and apparently very hungry – Seminoles pulling off the upset over last season’s national championship runner-ups. I know Gonzaga holds the edge in scoring, shooting, free throws, defense, and rebounding, but Florida State has been more impressive since the start of the tournament and this tournament has produced more than its fair share of upsets, so another one just wouldn’t be that surprising. Florida State has gone a robust 10-2 ATS in their last 12 non-conference games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games while Gonzaga is an uninspiring 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 NCAA Tournament games, 4-13-1 ATS in their last 18 games following an ATS win and a winless 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against teams from the ACC. I like Florida State to cover the chalk by winning outright. Pick: Florida State +5.5
