Season Series

The Hokies go for the season sweep, winning 52-49 in Atlanta on Jan. 9. Ahmed Hill scored 15 points, and Kerry Blackshear Jr. added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Virginia Tech. The Hokies trailed just once after the first minute of the game. Virginia Tech, one of the nation’s best 3-point shooting team, hit only five 3s and finished at 18.5 percent from beyond the arc but still made enough stops to win.

Jose Alvarado scored 20 points and Abdoulaye Gueye had 11 for Georgia Tech. James Banks, the Jackets’ second-leading scorer, had just two points on 1-for-5 shooting. Curtis Haywood III, its fourth-leading scorer, missed the game with flu-like symptoms.

Why Bet on Georgia Tech?

The Jackets lost their fifth in a row Sunday, 69-59 at Notre Dame. The Irish overcame a 32.8-percent shooting night thanks to T.J. Gibbs’ 20 points, 18 from D.J. Harvey and John Mooney’s 15th double-double of the season. Georgia Tech shot 40.7 percent (22 of 54) but turned the ball over 14 times, six more than the Irish, and was outrebounded 45-39, surrendering 20 offensive boards.

Curtis Haywood II returned to the Georgia Tech starting five that also included Jose Alvarado and Michael Devoe at the guards, Abdoulaye Gueye at big forward and James Banks III at center. That lineup has started six games this season, and the Yellow Jackets are 2-3 in those games. Tech has used nine different starting lineups this season.

No Yellow Jacket has started every game this season, and 10 different players have started three or more games. Tech used eight players in the game for nine or more minutes, nine Jackets played altogether. At least eight players have seen significant minutes in all of Tech’s games this season, despite a variety of injuries and illnesses.

Tech’s seven three-point field goals were a season-high against an ACC team and the most since the Yellow Jackets hit eight against Kennesaw State on Dec. 28. Georgia Tech has held 15 of its 24 opponents, and six of its 11 ACC foes, under 40 percent from the floor. Notre Dame shot 32.3 percent and 32.8 percent in its two meetings with the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech ranks No. 5 in the ACC in scoring defense (67.1 ppg), No 3 in field goal percentage defense (39.7 pct.) and No. 1 in three-point percentage defense (28.1 pct.) against conference opponents. The Jackets rank No. 4 in steals (7.73 pg) and No. 2 in blocked shots (5.27 pg).

Why Bet on Virginia Tech?

Virginia Tech (18-5, 7-4 ACC), in its fifth season under head coach Buzz Williams, began its conference schedule 7-2 but has lost its last two starts to No. 16 Louisville at home and to Clemson on the road. The loss to the Cardinals is the only home loss this season for the Hokies, who are 11-1 in Cassell Coliseum.

The Hokies are off a 59-51 loss at Clemson on Saturday. Clemson limited Virginia Tech to just one field goal over the final eight minutes to beat a ranked opponent for the first time this season. Virginia Tech had its chances and was down just 41-40 after Kerry Blackshear Jr.’s basket with 12:29 to go. But Clemson’s Marcquise Reed and Hunter Tyson followed with 3-pointers to build the lead. Blackshear hit two foul shots make it 47-44, but that was as close as the Hokies would get.

Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech should be a close one.
