Last Meeting

This is the first of two scheduled meetings this season. Last year they played just once and Duke won 66-65 at home. Jaemyn Brakefield scored the go-ahead basket on a reverse layup with 1:58 left and Duke came up with a final-possession stop. Matthew Hurt scored 22 points to lead the Blue Devils. Jay Huff finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavaliers. UVA shot 60% in the first half, but just 41% after the break on Saturday, going the final 3:48 without a basket. It was the fifth time in seven meetings between the teams that the game was decided by one or two points.

Duke leads the all-time series 122-52 and is 59-11 at home.

Why Bet on Virginia?

Virginia (14-9) is probably an NCAA Tournament bubble team right now but the Wahoos come off a big 71-58 win over Miami on Saturday. The Cavs finished with 23 assists, shot 60% (30 of 50) overall and made 8 of 15 from long range.

Armaan Franklin scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting to lead Virginia. In addition to Franklin, Jayden Gardner (12 points) and Kihei Clark (11 points) scored in double figures for the Cavaliers. Reece Beekman (9 points) was one point shy of earning a double-double after tallying a game-high 10 assists. He also added two steals. Francisco Caffaro went 4-for-4 from the field to score eight points and grabbed five rebounds. The Cavaliers handed Miami its worse loss to an ACC opponent in nearly a year, when Florida State defeated the Hurricanes 88-71 on Feb. 24, 2021.

For the first time since early last month, the Wahoos have posted back-to-back wins.

“I think we’ve slowly been improving,” Coach Tony Bennett said, “and sometimes in that improvement … we’ll take a step back here and there, but slowly there’s been improvement in terms of that, and the experience of more games and guys playing together, I think, has helped. But that’s what you’re always chasing: chasing quality, chasing improvement. I think guys are a little more settled in and understand what it’s going to take and how you have to play.”

UVA is led by its returning backcourt of Clark (9.8 ppg & 4.0 apg) and Beekman (7.9 ppg, 5.1 apg, 3.5 rpg & 2.2 spg), and the additions of transfers Gardner (14.3 ppg & 6.8 rpg) and Franklin (12.3 ppg).

The Cavaliers have averaged 66.8 points per game and allowed 54.2 points per game in their 14 wins. Virginia is 0-1 vs. ranked foes in 2021-22, losing 67-47 at then-No. 15 Houston on Nov. 16, 2021. UVA’s last top-10 road win was a 69-61 decision at then-No. 8 North Carolina on Feb. 11, 2019. UVA is 3-5 on the road.

Why Bet on Duke?

Duke (19-3) won its fifth straight game on Saturday, 87-67 at bitter rival North Carolina. Duke shot 58% and took all drama out of the renewal of the famed rivalry early in both halves, both in building a big lead and then stretching it back out after the Tar Heels had made a run to climb back in it.

The win allowed Duke to give retiring coach Mike Krzyzewski a 17th and final victory in the Smith Center, where he coached against the Tar Heels in its opening game in January 1986. The 20-point victory matched the Blue Devils’ second-largest road win in the Coach K era over UNC. Duke won by 29 (87-58) in 2002 and by 20 (81-61) in 1999.

Duke out-rebounded Carolina, 40-24, marking the Tar Heels’ fewest rebounds this season and their second-largest deficit on the boards (Kentucky out-rebounded the UNC by 18, 44-26). It was just the third time UNC was outrebounded this season. Duke has held 15 of its 22 opponent this season to 70 points or less.

Duke handed North Carolina its first home loss of the season (12-1). Duke has handed three teams this season their first (or only) home loss – UNC (12-1), Notre Dame (9-1) and Wake Forest (13-1). Over the last five seasons, Duke has faced a team on a home winning streak of 10+ games seven times, and is 7-0 in those games – including 3-0 this season (UNC, ND, Wake).

Freshman AJ Griffin scored a game and career-high 27 points on 11-of-17 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range. Griffin’s 27 points are tied for the fourth most by a Blue Devil in their first Duke-UNC game. RJ Barrett’s 33 in 2019 stand as both the Duke freshman record vs. the Heels, and the most by a Blue Devil in their first Duke-UNC game. Griffin is averaging 20.7 points over Duke’s last three games. Freshman Paolo Banchero finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double this season.

Six-time ACC Freshman of the Week Banchero is averaging a double-double over Duke’s five-game winning streak with 15.8 points, 10.8 rebounds in that span. Banchero, the ACC’s lone representative on the late-season watch list for the Wooden Award, has nine 20-point efforts this season — seven coming against power conference opponents — six in ACC play — in addition to 21 points vs. Gonzaga. He is the second leading scorer (18.6) and rebounder (9.5) in ACC play.

Sophomore Mark Williams, a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, leads the ACC and is 11th nationally in blocks (3.14). Williams is 38-of-49 (.776) from the field and averaging 12.7 points over Duke’s last seven games.

Duke leads the ACC in both field goal defense (.400) and three-point defense (.300) — one of just two power conference teams this season holding opponents to .400/.300 or worse (LSU).
