2018 NFL Preseason Week 2 Sure Losers

New York Giants at Detroit Lions

Not only did the New York Giants suffer a humbling 20-10 loss to Cleveland in their preseason opener, but more importantly, the G-Men have some serious questions marks at backup quarterback where No. 2 Davis Webb doesn’t look like he’s going to cut it. Webb completed just 9 of 22 passes for 70 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Browns while third-stringer Alex Tanney went 3-for-7 for 49 yards and rookie Kyle Lauletta, 6-for-9 for 48 yards.While the Detroit Lions certainly didn’t look very encouraging in their 16-10 preseason-opening loss to Oakland, they’ve got a more than capable backup in veteran Matt Cassel as he showed by going 10 of 18 for 81 yards while younger backup Jake Rudock also impressed by going 12-for-19 for 84 yards. While neither quarterback threw a touchdown or interception, they are by far, better than New York’s backups in this contest. With the Lions playing at home, I say they’re the easy pick to win and cover the spread.Pick: Detroit Lions -3

Miami Dolphins at Carolina Panthers

Miami lost their preseason opener to Tampa Bay 26-24 last week and like the Giants, they’ve got their fair share of problems when it comes to the backup quarterback position. While backup David Fales looked decent by going 8 of 11 for 115 yards, it’s clear that veteran Brock Osweiler and fourth string roster hopeful Bryce Petty probably shouldn’t be in the league.The Panthers won their preseason opener by beating Buffalo 28-23 despite being on the road. Backup quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Garrett Gilbert both played excellent football by combining for 214 passing yards with one touchdown apiece and no interceptions.I’m going to advise you to back the Carolina Panthers to get the win and cover the chalk against the Dolphins based on the fact that they have the better backup quarterbacks, they’re playing at home and have the far better defense – and head coach.
