As we head into the second half of the NFL season, we can now look back at what has been a rather strange opening 8 weeks. The parity in the league this year is quite unbelievable, as has been the performances of some of the teams that we expected to be challenging for a playoff spot and a Super Bowl. The favorites now appear to be very clear, although that could all change again over the course of the next couple of months. For now, it’s time to look ahead to Week 9 of the NFL season, which we will start by delivering some O/U picks. Also, be aware that we will have SU and ATS picks coming out for you this week, too.

Oakland Raiders at San Francisco 49ers (UNDER 47)
Despite the fact that these two teams have just 2 wins between them and that neither has had much success on the offensive side of the football, this is a game that could go off in a big way. It could happen, but I just don’t see it playing out that way.Points have been very hard to come by for both of these teams, and there really is little to suggest that things will change on Thursday night. 5 of the last 6 games that Oakland have played on the road have gone UNDER, while the 49ers have seen each of their last 2 games go the same way. Definitely looking at the UNDER with this one.

- The total has gone UNDER in 11 of Oakland’s last 14 games
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of San Francisco’s last 5 games at home
Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens (OVER 47 ½)
Over the years, the meetings between these two AFC North teams have been close-fought, low-scoring battles, with the defense coming out on top. While the Ravens are still a solid defensive team, they have opened things up a little on the attacking side this season, averaging almost 25 PPG.On the other side of the football, you have a Steelers offense that is beginning to click like we thought they would, averaging about 34 PPG over the past 3 weeks. The Steelers defense is still a big question mark, so I think this meeting might see some scoring. I am bucking the trends here and taking the OVER.

- The total has gone OVER in 7 of Pittsburgh’s last 9 games
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Baltimore’s last 7 games when playing Pittsburgh
Atlanta Falcons at Washington Redskins (OVER 47 ½)
This is another game where I am going against historical trends. 5 of the last 6 meetings between these two teams have gone the way of the under, but I am looking in a different direction for this one.

The Falcons are coming in with a secondary that is being held together by some dodgy glue after being hit hard by injuries. Opponents are having some real success taking deep shots against them, which helps the OVER in a big way. Atlanta has seen 5 of their last 6 games this season go OVER, and I believe that the point total we have here is very attainable.

Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings (UNDER 51)
There is a logjam in the NFC North, with the Chicago Bears on top despite being just 1 game over .500. The Lions are a game under the .500 mark, but they are certainly not out of the race in a division that is likely to go undecided all the way until the final week of the season. We have an important divisional match-up here and a meeting that almost always goes the way of the UNDER. 7 of the last 9 meetings between these two have gone that route, which includes the last 5 games played in Minnesota.
