New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills

The Patriots have yet to be tested this season. They were 30-14 home winners over the Jets on Sunday. Tom Brady completed 28-of-42 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Brady wasn’t sacked in the victory. He spread the wealth to seven different receivers including Josh Gordon, who led the way with 83 yards on six catches. The first of Brady’s two touchdowns came on a 25-yard play-action pass to Phillip Dorsett, who scampered into the end zone untouched. Later Brady connected with Julian Edelman, finding him all alone for a touchdown on third-and-goal.

Will Brady have Julian Edelman this week? He had a chest injury Sunday, although X-rays were negative. Should Edelman miss time, undrafted rookie Jakobi Meyers would handle slot duties—he lined up inside on 86.2 percent of his snaps against the Jets—with Josh Gordon and Phillip Dorsett continuing to work outside.

Rewriting History

Meanwhile, the Patriots have placed fullback James Develin on injured reserve with a neck injury. Develin has been a major part of the Patriots’ run game since 2013 in one of the league’s few offense that still utilizes the fullback position to a heavy extent. He scored four touchdowns on just six carries in 2018.

New England is the first team to not allow a passing or rushing touchdown in each of their first three games of a season in the Super Bowl era. Additionally, the Patriots are the first team to hold opponents scoreless in the first half of five consecutive games, including the postseason, the longest such streak in the Super Bowl era.

Brady is an incredible 30-3 in his career against Buffalo, the most wins by a quarterback against any one team in NFL history.

What about the Bills?

Buffalo was a 21-17 winner over the Bengals on Sunday. The Bills’ three wins this season have come against teams with a combined 1-8 record.

Josh Allen completed 22-of-36 passes for 243 yards with one touchdown and an interception in the Bills victory vs. Cincinnati. Allen was also effective in the run game, rushing for 46 yards on nine carries. Allen has thrown for 750 yards (16th in NFL) in three games and is completing 64.1 percent of his passes. That completion rate is up almost 12 points from his mark in 2018 in his rookie season.

Frank Gore rushed 14 times for 76 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals. Gore started as expected with rookie Devin Singletary sidelined. Not yet clear if Singletary will return from his hamstring injury for this one. Cornerback Taron Johnson and tight end Tyler Kroft both also missed Week 3.

Kansas City Chiefs at Detroit Lions

  • NFL Week 4 Odds: Kansas City Chiefs -7

Kansas City improved to 3-0 with Sunday’s 33-28 win over the Ravens. Appearing in his 20th career game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes passed for 374 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions for a 132.0 rating. Mahomes found Demarcus Robinson 1-on-1 for an 18-yard score, and Mecole Hardman wide open for an 83-yarder. His 14-yarder to LeSean McCoy came on a perfectly-executed screen.

Through 20 career games, Mahomes has the highest marks by a quarterback in passing yards (6,576), passing touchdowns (60) and passer rating (115.3 – minimum 100 attempts) in NFL history. Mahomes recorded his 13th career game with at least 300 pass yards, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner (12 games) for the most by a player in his first 20 career games in NFL history. Mahomes – who passed for 378 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions in Week 1 and 443 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 2 – is the first player to record at least 350 passing yards, three touchdown passes and zero interceptions in three consecutive games in NFL history.

What about the Lions?

Detroit was a 27-24 upset winner in Philadelphia. Matthew Stafford completed 18-of-32 passes for 201 yards and one touchdown. Stafford hit Marvin Jones (6/101/1) in the back of the end zone when it counted most, putting the Lions up by two scores to start the fourth quarter.

The Lions come in as underdogs against the Chiefs in NFL Week 4.

Penalties have been an issue for the Lions all season long, and those mistakes kept the Eagles in the game Sunday. The Lions committed four defensive penalties on third downs to extend drives. Darius Slay said “we’ll see” when asked of his availability for Week 4 against Kansas City. A hamstring injury limited Slay to 42 snaps in Sunday’s win at Philadelphia. One of the best cover corners in football, losing Slay would be a huge downgrade for the Lions’ secondary, especially with the high-powered Chiefs visiting. Mike Ford would start opposite Rashaan Melvin if Slay can’t get the green light.

A Little History

The last time the Lions were unbeaten in Week 4 or later and faced another unbeaten team was Oct. 7, 1962. The 3-0 Lions played the 3-0 Packers in Green Bay (the Packers won). Current Lions coach Matt Patricia was almost 12 years away from being born back THEN. It’s also only the ninth time since 1940 the Lions have not lost in their first three games of the season. The Lions are 3-5 in those games.
