Now that the NFL regular season is over, the teams who missed out on the playoffs will be starting to think about rebuilding and putting together a team that can compete. For some teams, that means trying to land a franchise QB that can lead them into the future. That is easier said than done, as not every QB taken high in the draft turns into a competent NFL player. Still, there are some good options available in the upcoming draft, a few of whom could go in the first round, so let’s take a look at the players and where they potentially might land. Let’s jump right into action so can start getting all set to place your bets against their NFL Draft odds.
2021 NFL Draft QBs: What we need to know
Trevor Lawrence – Barring some sort of major disaster, the Clemson Tigers QB will be heading to Jacksonville immediately following the draft. The Jaguars went 1-15 on the season, but they are still delighted at landing the man who they believe can help turn things around for this franchise. Lawrence was nothing short of brilliant in his time at Clemson, and while he could not get his team to the National Championship Game this season, that does not detract from the fact that he is far and away the best QB in the upcoming draft.
Justin Fields – There are some who would argue that Fields is a great college QB, but not one that could make the transition to the NFL. Not that I am trying to compare at this point, but there were a lot of people who said the same about Lamar Jackson. The Ohio State QB is as athletic as they come, with most of the questions being about his arm accuracy. A lot of potential questions were answered in his performance against Clemson in the playoff semi-finals. Another similar performance against Alabama in the National Championship Game and we might see Fields go to the Jets as the second pick in the draft.
Zach Wilson – If you take a look at the mock drafts that are all over the internet, you see that most have the New York Jets taking a QB with their pick. While some are saying Fields, there are more who seem to believe that Wilson, who played with BYU in college, is a better pick. Wilson certainly lit it up this past season, throwing for 33 TD with just 3 INT. He also completed around 73% of his passes, so this looks like a player destined to land somewhere in the top 5. Atlanta may also be a potential destination for Wilson.
Trey Lance – Considered by many to be perhaps the second best QB available in the draft, Lance saw his stock drop a little in 2021. The North Dakota State QB had a stellar season in 2019, but he did not get a lot of help from the current pandemic situation, as the Bison were only able to manage one game in 2020. This is a guy that has plenty of upside, though, and he could go top 10, especially if Washington decides to trade up.
Kyle Trask – One guy who saw his stock rise quite dramatically this season was Kyle Trask of the Florida Gators. He was, at one point, posting Heisman type numbers and he just recently announced that he is declaring for the draft. He, or Mac Jones of Alabama, might be the last QB to go in the first round, and it might not be a stretch to see him land in Pittsburgh as the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger.
