It is always fun to try and predict which of the current batch of rookies will come in and make the biggest impact on the teams that drafted them. Defensive players don’t tend to get the love that the offensive rookies do, but they all play a role in making their respective teams better. For the purposes of this piece, we are going to focus on the offensive rookies by taking a look at some of the favorites to win the rookie of the year. It has been a QB that has taken this award in 3 of the last 4 seasons and given how good the batch of QB’s drafted this season, it is perhaps not a surprise that they are dominating the odds right now. Let’s take a closer look at the top 4 favorites along with their Offensive Rookie of the Year odds.

Trevor Lawrence (+200)

In his 3 years with the Clemson Tigers, Trevor Lawrence looked like an NFL star in the making. You never want to add the “can’t miss” label to any player, especially given how many busts we have seen over the years, but Lawrence looks to have all the tools required to be a franchise QB in the NFL. He will be plying his trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars and will have the luxury of having his college running back, Travis Etienne, lining up beside him on the Jags offense. While he does seem to have all the teams, he is going to a poor team that will have an unproven coach, at least at the NFL level, patrolling the sideline. There is a lot that could go wrong here, but Lawrence is a worthy favorite.

Trey Lance (+500)

The big question here is whether or not Lance will start for the San Francisco 49ers this season, although he is expected to battle Jimmy Garoppolo for that starting spot. One of the biggest knocks against Lance is that he only started 19 games for the North Dakota State Bison in his college career, so he is not bringing a ton of experience to the NFL with him. That said, this is a kid that only threw 1 pick in those 19 games, as opposed to 30 TD passes. He won all kinds of offensive awards in his lone full season in 2019, so he certainly cannot be counted out as a potential starter and rookie of the year.

Justin Fields (+550)

You would have to consider Fields a longshot to win the award this season, mainly because the Chicago Bears have already said that Andy Dalton will be their starter. There were a lot of people willing to write off Fields as an NFL QB, but his performances for the Ohio State Buckeyes changed the minds of a lot of his detractors. His style is very similar to that of Lamar Jackson, and we all know how that has turned out to this point.

Najee Harris (+600)

Given how much teams throw the football nowadays, the running back is not the valuable commodity that it once was. That said, if you go back to 2015, you will find that no less than 3 RB’s have taken the offensive rookie of the year award. Rookie backs have an opportunity to make an immediate impact, especially of they are slotted into a good team. That is where Najee Harris finds himself with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been crying out for a great RB for years. I think he is a great bet at this price.
