With free agency and the NFL Draft now squarely in the rearview mirror, we are now in the countdown phase to the opening of training camps and the start of the new season. There is still a lot that can happen between now and then, with final transactions and potential injury issues still to arise before the kick-off of the 2022 season. With that in mind, it is worth noting that the win totals for each team as they stand now might be a little different by the time we get to Week 1. For now, we are going to look at all the totals and make predictions based on how things stand now. For the purposes of this piece, we are going to turn our attention to the AFC South so you can plan your bets against the NFL Team Totals odds.
NFL 2022 Season Win Total Over/Under Picks for the AFC South Division
Houston Texans – OVER 4 ½
The last couple of seasons in Houston can probably be best described as a circus both on and off the field. This is a team very much in rebuilding mode, so we probably should not be expecting too much from the Texans in 2022. Last season, the Texans delivered 4 wins in a rather tumultuous season, and while we should not expect to see a huge turnaround this year, I think we can reasonably assume that the atmosphere is better now. That in itself might be enough to see this team steady the ship and improve a little.
Indianapolis Colts – OVER 9 ½
While not a total bust, I think we can all agree that the Carson Wentz era in Indianapolis did not go as well as the Colts might have expected. This can be verified in that they decided to cut ties with the QB at the end of last season. Despite missing the playoffs and having struggles on offense, Indianapolis still managed to come away with 9 wins. The Colts have decided to go the proven veteran route for the coming season, luring Matt Ryan away from Atlanta. In my mind, Ryan is an upgrade at the position, so it would not be a huge surprise to go a win or two better than they did in 2021.
Jacksonville Jaguars – UNDER 6 ½
This is a tough one, as the Jaguars are a team essentially starting anew this coming season. The Urban Meyer era, which did not even last a full season, was an unmitigated disaster from day one, with the Jaguars managing just 3 wins on the season. Doug Pederson is a coach who will immediately right the ship in terms of management, but he still has a ton of work to do to make this a winning franchise. The Jaguars have made some good offseason moves to help Trevor Lawrence in his second season, and while this team will be better, 6 wins might well be the high bar.
Tennessee Titans – OVER 9 ½
In the 3 seasons that Mike Vrabel has been the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, the team has never had fewer than 9 wins. I would expect that they will once again be challenging the Colts for the division title, and to do that, they are going to need to get into double-digit wins. They do have some tough games on their schedule this coming season, including games against the Bills and the Chiefs, but they also have some winnable games. Certainly enough to get them to a minimum of 10 wins.
