Why Bet On Cleveland?
Not sure you should ever bet on Cleveland (0-5), which is 1-20 under coach Hue Jackson. Last week, the Browns lost 17-14 at home to the Jets. Browns backup QB Kevin Hogan threw two touchdown passes, a 21-yarder to rookie tight end David Njoku and a 41-yarder to Duke Johnson in the final two minutes to pull the Browns within 17-14. Cleveland tried an onside kick, but Jets linebacker Julian Stanford recovered it and Josh McCown knelt three times to run out the clock. Hogan was in the game because Jackson pulled ineffective starter DeShone Kizer, a rookie who is the lowest-rated QB in the NFL. It’s expected that Hogan will start this one. Hogan, in his second year from Stanford, played far better than Kizer on Sunday, going 16-for-19 and leading the offense to 14 second-half points. Hogan’s year of experience in the offense shows in his quick decision-making and ability to get rid of the ball. He has taken advantage of his opportunities from preseason through Sunday, completing 26 of 38 passes (68.4 percent) for 377 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, a rating of 104.8. Hogan would be the franchise’s 28th starting QB since 1999. One bright spot from the Jets loss was No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett having two sacks in his NFL debut. Why Bet On Houston?
The Browns traded out of the No. 12 spot in this year’s draft, sending it to Houston for the Texans’ first-round pick and their first-rounder next year. The Texans took Clemson QB Deshaun Watson, and he already looks like a star with 12 TD passes, second in the NFL. In Sunday night’s 42-34 loss to Kansas City, Watson passed for 261 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions for a 119.8 passer rating. He Watson became the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to pass for five touchdowns in a single game and the third to accomplish the feat without throwing an interception. Watson, who was 22 years, 24 days old on Sunday, became the third youngest quarterback in NFL history with five touchdown passes in a single game, trailing only Matthew Stafford and Jameis Winston. Watson has the most touchdown passes by a rookie quarterback in his team’s first five games of a season, surpassing the Titans’ Marcus Mariota, who had nine TD passes in his team’s first five games in 2015.
However, the news wasn’t all good Sunday. Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was lost to a season-ending tibial plateau fracture. He fell to the ground while engaged in a block on the Chiefs’ opening drive. Also, he missed the last 13 games of the 2016 regular season because of a back injury. So perhaps his body is breaking down. In addition, starting outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus will be out for the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle.
Thus it will be up to former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney to carry the defense. Last season, Clowney had six sacks and 52 tackles (both career highs) in his healthiest year since he entered the NFL in 2014. Through five games this season, the outside linebacker has three sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
