Expert Week 17 NFL Betting Analysis: Browns vs. Steelers

Written by on December 29, 2017

For the most part, we head into the final week of the NFL regular season knowing which teams will be in the playoffs. The AFC is a little tighter than the NFC, as we still have a couple of teams in the hunt, which means that there are also a couple of teams who need to win to maintain their current Wild Card spot. The one thing that we do know is that the Pittsburgh Steelers are headed to the postseason, and will have a bye in the opening week. They have at least secured the #2 seed, but can still take the top spot if the NFL betting huge underdogs New York Jets can somehow find a way to win on the road against the Patriots in the final game of the season. How things shake out in that game may decide how much we see the Steelers starters on the field for their final game of the regular season against the Cleveland Browns. It has been another disaster year for the Browns, and a loss here would have them going winless on the season. The Steelers are favored by 11 for this one, with the point total set at 38.

Why bet on the Cleveland Browns?

The Cleveland Browns have not been relevant for a very long time, but after going 1-15 last season and having what looked to be a very good draft day, the feeling was that 2016 was going to be rock bottom. It would appear that this year is going to be where things are about as bad as they get because this team has been truly awful. They have another QB in DeShone Kizer who looks to be a bust and are already talking about taking another QB when the draft rolls around in 2018. The new GM has come in and already slammed the picks made by his predecessor, which cannot fill its current crop of players with a lot of confidence. The offense has sputtered for the Browns all season long, managing just 14 PPG, while the defense has given up 25 PPG. Cleveland is 3-12 ATS, which includes a 1-6 ATS record on the road.

Why bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Word is that the Steelers will rest Ben Roethlisberger and LeVeon Bell this coming weekend, so look for the lines on this game to perhaps change to reflect that. While the Steelers still have an outside shot at the #1 seed, it is understandable that they would rest two players who have had issues with injuries heading into the playoffs over the last couple of seasons. Pittsburgh is also likely to be without Antonio Brown, who get injured in the loss to the Patriots a couple of weeks ago. Despite resting some starters, Pittsburgh should come in as the NFL Betting Odds favorite in Week 17 against the Browns. Even with those potential omissions, you still feel good about this team going out and getting the win, especially when you consider how good they have been on the defensive side of the football this year, surrendering less than 19 PPG. The Steelers are just 7-8 ATS and 5-10 O/U in 2017.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Even without a number of their biggest playmakers, the Steelers should still come out and steamroll the Browns. I believe this will be a comfortable win for Pittsburgh. Score: Cleveland Browns 13 – Pittsburgh Steelers 30
