Saints could pay fines while Drew Brees has fractured ribs and a collapsed lung
The Saints face some heavy fines from the league for their social media blasted locker room celebration after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although the league says they will place fines on the Saints because it was a second infraction, and because you can’t celebrate in the locker room due to coronavirus rules, let’s be honest.
The NFL hates the New Orleans Saints. They always have. They suspended Sean Payton for a year due to Bounty Gate even though a team like the Patriots got away with filming their opponent’s practices and got . . . what? A slap on the wrist?
In any case, New Orleans doesn’t care. They will pay the fines to the No Fun League. More pressing? Quarterback Drew Brees has fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. Brees should miss at least 2 to 3 weeks.
Jameis Winston will fill in for Drew. If Winston protects the football, he’s a solid quarterback. Jameis led the league in yards thrown last season while a Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But he also threw over 30 TD passes and over 30 interceptions. That’s a rarity in a bad way.
In any case, the Saints are on a roll after winning their sixth straight. They’re now a favorite to win the Super Bowl. Brees will return eventually. Sean Payton and the rest of coaching staff knows that if Jameis could hold down the fort for about a month, New Orleans will have a shot to take their first Vince Lombardi Trophy since 2010.
Dolphins, Raiders, and Cardinals in solid playoff positions
In hindsight, it should surprise nobody that the Miami Dolphins, Las Vegas Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals are in a position to grab playoff bids. All three often doormat squads made big moves during the offseason to get better in a hurry.
The Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa. Tua completes just 60% of his passes. He’s thrown only 5 touchdowns in three games. But, and this is huge, he has yet to throw a pick. What does that tell us? Tagovailoa won’t force a pass. He’ll either scramble, take the sack, or throw the ball away. He won’t put his team in a bad position, which is the first rule to having a long career in the NFL.
The Raiders had talent two, three years ago. The talent remains. The problem with Las Vegas was that they played in a city that they knew they were leaving. That’s why their 2019 turned into a disaster. With more stability, Las Vegas has become a solid playoff contender. Almost as important? Derek Carr has thrown just a couple of picks while the defense has turned it on in recent weeks.
Arizona signed DeAndre Hopkins. DeAndre caught a Hail Mary pass in the Cards’ Week 10 win over the Bills to go to 6-3. Zona is in a tie atop the NFC West with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams.
One thing all three teams do is play decent defense. The Raiders’ defense has turned into a top AFC unit, which makes Las Vegas the team to watch. If LV upsets KC again in their rematch on Sunday, watch out. The +3300 Super Bowl odds will significantly drop.
Arizona at Seattle on Thursday night kicks off important NFL Week 11
Week 11 is put up or shut up time. The Seahawks, losers of 3-of-4, face off against the rival Arizona Cardinals in a rematch that started their swoon. Seattle’s defense is a mess. Don’t be surprised if the surging Desert Birds win this one straight up.
Tennessee at Baltimore, Green Bay at Indianapolis, and Sunday night’s matchup between the Chiefs and Raiders are all key games. Then on Monday night, the 7-3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers battle the 6-3 Los Angeles Rams.
