The Philadelphia Eagles were interested in potentially drafting QB Zach Wilson this year, but the New York Jets took him at No. 2 overall. Now, the Eagles get to see what they might be missing as they visit the Jets to conclude the teams’ NFL preseason schedules on Friday. The Jets are favored on the NFL odds.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?
Will Eagles starting QB Jalen Hurts play? He warmed up before the team’s Week 2 35-0 preseason loss to New England but couldn’t go because of an illness – Hurts had some abdominal issues but nothing COVID related. “For a guy like that to tell us, he’s a tough guy, it must have been hurting him pretty good,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said.
Hurts lost his chance to play with first-round pick DeVonta Smith. Smith did not play in the preseason opener because of a knee injury. The Eagles moved up two spots in the first round to select the reigning Heisman Trophy winner with the No. 10 overall pick. Smith caught two passes for 19 yards against the Patriots and looked healthy in his limited action. Joe Flacco started at QB and was 10 of 17 for 83 yards and one interception.
Hurts appears to have recovered completely from the stomach infection but it’s still not clear if he will go here. Coach Nick Sirianni said the Eagles are still going to wait until after two joint practices with the Jets before making a decision about Hurts’ playing status for the final preseason game of 2021.
“That’s something we’re going to continue to evaluate,” Sirianni said. “Again, like I said for the past couple games, I’d hate to give you an answer and then it not play out, so that’s something that is under constant evaluation. We are going to see how the work goes against the Jets and make a decision after that.”
Projected starting left tackle Andre Dillard suffered a knee sprain Aug. 11, and he was able to return to practice this week. It’s unclear if the 25-year-old will be ready to play in Friday’s preseason finale against the Jets, but barring a setback, he should be healthy for Week 1.
The Eagles have had several guys stand out during camp, with second-year wide receiver Quez Watkins and edge rusher Josh Sweat atop that list. Watkins scored a touchdown in Philadelphia’s preseason opener and he’s provided a big play spark. A 2020 sixth-round pick out of Southern Miss, Watkins played in 13 games as a rookie, compiling just seven catches for 106 yards and a TD. With Smith joining 2020 first-rounder Jalen Reagor, along with Greg Ward, Travis Fulgham, and even former second-rounder J.J. Arcega-Whiteside at the position, Watkins needed a standout summer to earn snaps come September. He has so far.
Why Bet on New York Jets?
The Jets of course took QB Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft and the Eagles were interested in trading up to No. 3, but only if Wilson was still available. That became a moot point with New York’s selection and the Jets weren’t trading that pick.New York is 2-0 in the preseason under first-year coach Robert Saleh after a 23-14 upset at Green Bay in Week 2. Wilson completed 9-of-11 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns. He’s been pretty good through two preseason outings, going a combined 15-of-20 for 191 yards and the pair of scores. Wilson has yet to use his legs through two exhibition contests, registering zero rushing attempts, but that’s still expected to be part of his game as a rookie.
Saleh said Wilson is “light years ahead” of normal rookies: “He’s been going through his progressions and he’s been pretty good at that. What you saw today was more the same of what we’re seeing, and I know sometimes the result’s not what we want. His process is light years ahead of what a normal rookie’s process will be. For him it’s the results sometimes will be good, sometimes will be bad, and he’s just got to continue to find ways to get better when he sees both.”
Corey Davis caught 4-of-6 targets for 70 yards in the Jets’ preseason game against the Packers. Tight end Tyler Kroft caught both of his targets for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie running back Michael Carter rushed 10 times for 52 yards. While Carter led the Jets in rushing in this one, he played behind both Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson, who split snaps 10-9 in favor of Coleman, with the starting offense.
Good-looking rookie wideout Elijah Moore has resumed practicing and is expected to suit up for Friday’s preseason finale against the Eagles. One of the summer’s most buzzed about rookies ended up missing a little under two weeks with a quad injury. First-round guard Alijah Vera-Tucker also returned to practice this week from a pectoral injury.
Offensive tackle Mekhi Becton left the practice field Tuesday and is being evaluated for a head injury, while rookie cornerback Brandin Echols is being looked at for a hip injury. The Jets took Becton out after he endured a head-to-head collision and vomited. Echols landed on his hip during a coverage play and left with trainers.
The Jets lost two defensive starters last week against the Packers, when edge Carl Lawson suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture in Thursday’s joint practice and linebacker Jarrad Davis sustained an ankle injury in Saturday’s game that will keep him out the next two months.
