Raise your hand if you thought that the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets would have more wins combined entering Week 3 than, say, the Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants would. Yeah, didn’t think so. The Jaguars are rare NFL lines road favorites on Sunday, with the Jets at +3.5 as underdogs.

In Week 9 of the 2015 season, the Jags lost 28-23 at the Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes while playing with a torn ligament in his left thumb, and Chris Ivory ran for two scores. Fitzpatrick is a backup with Tampa now and Ivory a backup with the Jaguars. Blake Bortles was 24 of 40 for 381 yards and two touchdowns, including a 20-yard pass to Bryan Walters with 2:16 left for Jacksonville. But Marcus Williams came up with his second interception of the game on Jacksonville’s next possession.

Why Bet On Jacksonville?

The last time the Jags were favored on the road came in 2011, when Jacksonville was favored by three points over a Colts team that was starting Curtis Painter at quarterback – that was the year Peyton Manning was out injured. Before that, the last time the Jags were favored in a road game came in 2008, when Jacksonville was a 7.5-point favorite for a game in Cincinnati. Overall, the Jags have only been favored in a total of four road games over the past 10 years. Jacksonville perhaps should move to London as it won a third straight game there last week, 44-7 over Baltimore. Bortles threw four touchdown passes, three to tight end Marcedes Lewis. The Jaguars (2-1) finished with 410 yards, easily outpacing their output in their first three games and handed the Ravens their worst defeat since Nov. 9, 1997, when they lost 37-0 at Pittsburgh. The strength of the Jaguars defense is the secondary, led by cornerbacks A.J. Bouye, whom the team signed in the offseason, and Jalen Ramsey, the team’s first-round draft choice in 2016. Jacksonville’s pass defense sits leads the league in surrendering an average of 124 yards per game. According to Pro Football Focus, opposing quarterbacks have a 14.6 passer rating when targeting Ramsey this season as he’s only allowed five catches for 34 yards on 15 targets. The Jaguars offense ranks No. 5 in the NFL in rushing as they average 140 yards on the ground. Running back Leonard Fournette, the fourth overall pick of the 2017 Draft, is their feature back and has rushed for 199 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries.

Why Bet On NY Jets?

Many thought the Jets (1-2) would go 0-16 this season, but they easily handled the visiting Dolphins 20-6 last week. Josh McCown threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson, and Bilal Powell ran for a score. McCown finished 18 of 23 for 249 yards, Chandler Catanzaro kicked two field goals, and the Jets forced Jay Cutler and the Dolphins into mistakes all game. The Jets also avoided their first 0-3 start since 2003. Jets safety Terrence Brooks was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3. Acquired from the Eagles one month ago, Brooks picked off two passes against the Dolphins last week, getting one on a fake punt and another off Cutler. He has played just 39 defensive snaps through three games, but Brooks is Pro Football Focus’ No. 11 safety. Are the Jets a safe bet this Sunday against the Jaguars? Running back Matt Forte is considered week to week and is expected to miss Week 4 against the Jaguars. X-rays were negative on Forte’s toe but he’s likely dealing with a sprain. The Jets will count on Powell, Elijah McGuire, and newcomer Travaris Cadet this week. Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 AC joint sprain. It’s an injury he can play through, but the team could limit his snaps. After limiting the Dolphins to just 30 yards on the ground and forcing Cutler into 44 pass attempts, the Jets want to put the ball in Bortles’ hands. The Jags likely will try to establish their power run game. “It’s going to be another opponent who feels like they can come in and run the ball on us. Miami thought they could come in and run all over us and they didn’t. We stopped it,” Wilkerson said. “It’s another opponent with two good backs. They have a first-rounder from LSU and Chris Ivory. We have our hands full with that, but as long as we stay in our gaps, wrap up and gang tackle, we’ll make them one-dimensional.”
