LA Chargers at NY Giants Week 5 NFL Lines, Preview & Prediction

Written by on October 5, 2017

The Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants are both too talented to be winless, interesting enough due to the fact that some of the NFL lines have favored them – but that’s where we are as the Bolts travel across country to face Big Blue in the ugliest matchup of Week 5. At least one team won’t go 0-16 – the NFL odds favor the Giants in Week 5.

Last Meeting

What makes this game interesting, I guess, is that it’s quite likely the final meeting between Chargers QB Philip Rivers and Giants counterpart Eli Manning. The Chargers took Manning at No. 1 overall in the 2004 draft but he refused to play in San Diego. So the Chargers traded him to the Giants for Rivers, taken No. 4 overall by New York, and a few other pieces. These teams last met in 2013, a 37-14 home Chargers win. Rivers threw three touchdown passes, two to Keenan Allen (then a rookie). Manning was picked off twice and dropped to 0-3 in his career against the Chargers. The Chargers hold a 6-5 edge in the all-time series against the Giants, although they are 3-3 in games played in New York.  The Bolts have won the last three times the teams have squared off.

Why Bet On LA Chargers?

Three of their losses are by a combined seven points – including last week’s 26-24 home defeat to Philadelphia. Rivers passed for 347 yards and two TDs for the Chargers, who have lost nine consecutive games dating to last season in San Diego. Tyrell Williams caught a 75-yard touchdown pass, but the Bolts are off to their first 0-4 start since 2003 — three years before Rivers became their starting quarterback. First-year coach Anthony Lynn says he’s ready to make some changes, although he hasn’t said what. One guy you might see more of is Austin Ekeler.  After turning heads as an undrafted free agent throughout training camp and preseason action, he took his first NFL handoff 35-yards to the end zone vs. Philly.  The electric Ekeler has also caught five passes for 47 yards. Changes along the offensive line also appear to be in the making. “(Dan) Feeney is going to be rotated in,” Lynn said. “Michael (Schofield) is going to be rotated in at right tackle.  We’ll see how that works out throughout the week.” The Chargers rank 15th in total offense (336.5 yards per game), sixth in passing (269.0 ypg), 29th in rushing (67.5 ypg) and 24th in points (18.0). Defensively, the Bolts rank 23rd in total defense (355.5 ypg), sixth in passing (192.0 ypg), 31st in rushing (163.5 ypg) and 23rd in points allowed (23.2).

Why Bet On NY Giants?

Big Blue lost on a last-second field goal for the second straight game in Week 4, 25-23 in Tampa. The Giants had taken a 23-22 lead on Rhett Ellison’s 2-yard TD reception with 3:16 remaining. Manning threw to Odell Beckham Jr., in the rear of the end zone for a 2-point conversion that was disallowed because the receiver had stepped out of bounds before making the catch. Manning finished 30 of 49 for 288 yards and no interceptions. He also scored New York’s first rushing TD of the season on a 14-yard scramble in the second quarter. Rookie RB Wayne Gallman finished with team-high totals of 11 carries for 42 yards, and he added two catches for eight yards, including a four-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Gallman was the first Giants running back to score a touchdown of any kind in his pro debut since Sept. 11, 2005. Gallman was the first Giants back to score his first career touchdown on a reception since Da’Rel Scott, who caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Eli Manning against Denver on Sept. 15, 2013. Are the NY Giants a safe bet in Week 5? The Giants allowed plays of 30 yards or more to five separate Buccaneers, including rookie tight end O.J. Howard’s 58-yard touchdown and a 36-yard run by Jacquizz Rodgers that set up Tampa’s first score. They hadn’t given up a play longer than 35 yards entering Week 4. This is the Giants’ worst start to a season since losing their first six games in 2013. That year, they won seven of their final 10 games to finish 7-9. New York ranks 25th in total defense (359.2 ypg), 14th in passing (216.5 ypg), 28th in rushing (142.8 ypg) and 25th in points allowed (23.8). The Giants rank 19th in total offense (324.2 ypg), seventh in passing (265.0 ypg), 31st in rushing (59.2 ypg) and 30th in points (15.0).
