Fins Play First Road Game

Miami is 1-1 in the preseason after losing 31-7 at home last Thursday to Baltimore in Jay Cutler’s Dolphins debut. He played the first two series for the Dolphins, was 3 of 6 for 24 yards, some of it in a no-huddle tempo, and his highlight play was one that didn’t count. Facing a third-and-16, Cutler stepped up and found DeVante Parker for what would have been a 31-yard gain — one erased by a holding flag. Senorise Perry had an 11-yard touchdown run for Miami, but he also fumbled away a kickoff return. The Dolphins also had a punt blocked in the second quarter. Miami has been gutted by injuries and has signed former Bengals LB Rey Maualuga. Maualuga played eight seasons (114 games) for the Bengals before being released in March. For his career, he has 584 combined tackles and 4.0 sacks. Two of those seasons were played under current Miami defensive coordinator Matt Burke. The Dolphins are hurting at middle linebacker after losing second-round pick and potential starter Raekwon McMillan (knee) for the season in Miami’s first exhibition game. Undrafted third-year player Mike Hull started in place of McMillan against the Ravens and will compete with Maualuga for the remainder of the preseason.

Philly played its first home exhibition game last Thursday and beat Buffalo 20-16 after losing Week 1 in Green Bay. Alshon Jeffery, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver signed by the Eagles in the offseason, caught his first pass from Carson Wentz and finished with two receptions for 23 yards. Jeffery didn’t play Week 1. Eagles WRs coach Mike Groh believes Alshon Jeffery is “behind” mentally after missing time early in camp. He said that after Jeffery ran a bad route in Thursday’s preseason game. The play was one the Eagles have run two different ways in practice and Jeffery seemed to be confused by it. “Anytime you miss the amount of time that he did, he’s a little bit behind,” said Groh. “Fortunately, we have time for him to catch up.” Coach Doug Pederson said first-round DE Derek Barnett will start getting more work with the starters after back-to-back impressive preseason performances. Barnett has been one of the best players on both sides of the ball so far this exhibition season. According to Pro Football Focus, he has three sacks, a QB hit, and four hurries through two games.

Chiefs Play Final Road Game

Kansas City opened the preseason with a 27-17 home loss to San Francisco but then won 30-12 in Cincinnati last week. Rookie Patrick Mahomes threw a pair of touchdown passes, solidifying his spot as the Chiefs’ primary backup to Alex Smith. Mahomes, the 10th overall pick from Texas Tech, was 10 of 14 for 88 yards with touchdowns of 1 and 7 yards. The Chiefs scored on each of their first five possessions for a 30-9 lead. Smith was 8 of 9 for 83 yards with a TD, and Tyler Bray threw an 18-yard touchdown on his first play. Kansas City had up 410 yards, including 228 rushing. Charcandrick West ran for 113 yards on only seven carries. Rookie RB Kareem Hunt “tweaked” his ankle in Saturday’s preseason game, but coach Andy Reid said he’s “fine.” Hunt, a very popular fantasy dynasty pick, was seen getting taped up after his final touch, but it didn’t have the looks of a serious issue. Hunt was great against the Bengals, finishing with eight rushes for 40 yards and three catches for 23. He’s putting heat on Spencer Ware for the starting job. Reid said safety Eric Berry would probably get some work in practice this week and perhaps play on Friday night against the Seahawks depending on how he fares. “I’m being a little bit conservative in that area,” Reid said. “I think we know what he can do. But at the same time I want to make sure he’s comfortable going into our first game against New England.” Berry hasn’t practiced or played for a couple weeks because of what the Chiefs are calling a heel injury.

Seahawks Are 2-0

Seattle blew out the Chargers in the preseason opener and then beat Minnesota 20-13 last week. However, the club suffered a big loss as left tackle George Fant tore his ACL in his right knee during the game and will have to undergo season-ending surgery. Fant suffered the injury with 8 minutes, 49 seconds left in the second quarter. He was moving backward in pass protection when teammate Justin Britt, who was on the ground, rolled into him. Second-year player Rees Odhiambo took over at left tackle. Luke Joeckel, who has been playing left guard, could also be an option to play that spot going forward. The offensive line was a major problem last year so this is the last thing Seattle needs. QB Russell Wilson looked good vs. the Vikings, completing 13 of 18 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. So far in the preseason, Wilson is 16-for-22 for 247 yards. Two of those incompletions were throwaways. And two more were drops.
