One team is building for the future, while the other is headed even further into the abyss than they already are. These two both struggled last season and have new head coaches who will both be looking for their first career NFL victory. Jacksonville Jaguars Preview
The Jaguars will look quite different this season. Ownership brought in head coach Urban Meyer to right the ship. The former Ohio State coach has brought a change of attitude to the Jags. After finishing 1-15 last season, Jacksonville was rewarded with the top pick in the draft. They took quarterback Trevor Lawrence who will be under center to start the season.
Offensively, Lawrence will have some nice targets to throw to. Leviska Shenault, DJ Chark Jr., and free agent signee Marvin Jones Jr. make up a formidable receiving crew. James Robinson will man the backfield after the first-round pick Travis Etienne was lost to injury for the season. Jacksonville’s offensive line could be an issue this season, so Meyer will run a lot of plays to get Lawrence out of the pocket.
Defensively, Jacksonville was one of the worst units in the NFL last season. Just a few short seasons ago, the Jags had one of the best defensive units in the league. They did make some free agency signings to try and shore up the defense, but they still have a long way to go.
Houston Texans Preview
What an offseason it was for the Houston Texans. With all of the Deshaun Watson issues hanging over their head, issues with hiring a new head coach, and their desire to let all of their good players leave, it has been a bad few months for the Texans.
Deshaun Watson is still on the team but doesn’t figure to play any time soon. As of now, the team will be in the hands of journeyman signal caller Tyrod Taylor. Taylor will have Brandin Cooks and Anthony Miller as his primary targets. Houston does have a backfield with some good, established running backs. Mark Ingram, David Johnson, and Phillip Lindsay will be in that stable.
Defensively, the loss of JJ Watt will put more pressure on Whitney Mercilus and Charles Omenihu. They’ll need to create pressure upfront for the Texans’ defense to be successful. Safety Justin Reid will be back from injury and should be a good player. There’ll be a lot of new faces on this unit, so it may take a while for them to mesh.
Predictions
It’s hard to believe that after last season Jacksonville would be favored in a game. The fact that they are a three-point favorite in this one signifies just how bad the oddsmakers think the Texans will be. We like Jacksonville in this one. We think that Lawrence will be able to move the ball against a Houston defense that will have a lot of holes. It’ll be close, but the Jags will cover in this one.
