NHL still hopes to have Stanley Cup Playoffs in the summer

The National Hockey League holds out hope that it can at least have a playoffs this summer. In some irony, the lone reason the NHL could even consider a playoff is because Japan decided to shut down the 2020 Olympics and stage the event in 2021. Hockey players had committed to the Olympics. No Olympics means the window opens for the NHL to resume play.

But time is slipping away. ESPN spoke to NHL Commissioner Bill Daly last Friday. Daly seemed positive although that positivity was shrouded with uncertainty.

Daly noted 3 factors before NHL can return to the ice

Commissioner Daly talked about 3 things out of hockey’s control that affect when the league could return to the ice.

  1. Coronavirus testing availability
  2. Where North America is on the coronavirus curve
  3. What stay-at-home orders are still at place

NHL has no say about any of those things. There’s a question about whether it is ethical for the National Hockey League to acquire testing kits, no matter the form, before the general public. That’s something both the NBA and NHL have debated internally and, in a lesser way, publicly.

2 big Questions for the NHL

Without answering the top 3 questions, the National Hockey League has no way of answering the following 2 questions.

  1. When can the NHL start the 2020-2021 Regular Season
  2. What will the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs look like

Daly’s biggest concern is that the longer the shutdown continues, the harder it will be to start the upcoming season. During normal times, the hockey league plays their first regular season game in early February.

If a summer playoffs happen, must NHL push back the start of the upcoming season? Hockey, as we’ve notated in these updates before, takes longer for their athletes to get into playing shape. It’s a unique sport that requires a different kind of physicality than basketball or baseball.

How will a summer playoffs affect the upcoming season?

The other question revolves around the playoffs. What would the postseason like look? Daly hinted there’s no way the NHL would have a single elimination playoffs. But if not single elimination than what?

NHL has talked to cities about playoff sites

The good news is that the NHL hasn’t shut down their season just yet. In addition, they’ve also discussed with cities about being sites for at least an NHL Playoffs. That’s a huge positive. Let’s leave on that note.
