NHL hasn’t decided on a start date
In early October, the National Hockey League stated that they’d start the season on January 1. Although that date remains in play, deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the NHL has yet to firm up any plans for the 2021 season.
Daly said the most important thing for the league is to get back to as much of a normal hockey league regular season as possible. If that involves starting before January first, the league will consider it. If it involves playing outside of a bubble type atmosphere, the NHL will consider that as well.
One thing that’s causing an issue for the league is how the border between Canada and the United States remains closed for any travel save for essential business. The National Hockey League is a North American sports leagues. Teams from Canada and the U.S. play each other on a daily basis during the regular season. Travel between nations is essential for the NHL to reach Daly’s goal of having as normal of a season as possible.
Daly did tell ESPN that he wants to give the seven teams that didn’t reach the NHL Qualifying Round, the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, and San Jose Sharks, more training camp time to prepare for the upcoming season.
The NHL is the most parity filled sports league in the world. It makes sense why Daly and the powers that be in the National Hockey League would want teams shut out of the Edmonton and Toronto bubble to have more time to prepare.
NHL Commissioner Bettman hopes for fans in the arena
While the deputy commissioner said nothing has been decided, the actual commissioner, Gary Bettman, stated that the ultimate goal is to have “fans in the arenas”. Like Adam Silver, the NBA’s commissioner, Bettman knows the massive hit the NHL will take if they can’t play games in front of fans.
Both Silver and Bettman are wrangling for fans to return to venues. NFL franchises have started to allow fans to return and it’s made a difference both in terms of play on the field and excitement around the pro football league’s brand.
The NHL doesn’t want to miss out on that. Also, Silver said the NBA could lose hundreds of millions of dollars if they don’t start the season before Dec. 25. That may have something to do with why Daly said January 1 as a start date is not a foregone conclusion.
Have a great week!
