NHL Believes It Can Finish the Regular Season

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly has remained bullish on finishing out the regular season. Last Friday, Daly stated that one of the first things NHL did was look for “building availability” for all of their teams.

The NHL thought they had a window to the end of July. But with the Olympics canceled, the window is now towards the end of August. That’s good news for hockey fans. What it means is that the league most definitely intends on finishing out the regular season and the playoffs. Any discussion about the upcoming offseason has been relegated to the back burner.

In talking to 101 ESPN in St. Louis this past Friday, Daly stated that there could come a point when the NHL may have to limit options. But as of now, he doesn’t believe that it’s come to that yet.

NHL Hopes to Start Mini-Camps in Late April or Early May

NHL wants to start a 45-day mini-camp in late April or early May. President Trump declared that social distancing rules in the U.S. would stay in effect until April 30. That means the earliest teams could start their mini-camps is in May.

Now that Japan pushed the Olympics to 2021, starting in early May, or even mid-May, might not be as big of a deal as it once was. If players can get a good 45-days of mini-camp in, NHL could get through the regular season and then play a shortened playoffs.

Who knows? By the way Daly has talked, the NHL might not want to skip any games before crowning the 2019-2020 NHL Season Stanley Cup winner.

Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby Are Okay With Skipping Right to Playoffs

A couple of players that wouldn’t mind going right to the playoffs are Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals star, told reporters that sorry, but he wouldn’t mind starting the playoffs right away.

Pens’ star Sidney Crosby said he’d like to get in as many games as he could but that he wouldn’t mind starting the playoffs right away, either. Why do both Ovechkin and Crosby want to skip the rest of the regular season and go right into the playoffs?

The Capitals are in first place in the Metropolitan Division while the Pittsburgh Penguins are in third place. If the playoffs started today, the Caps and Pens would be a part of the postseason.

But that’s not the only reason. If Bill Daly is right and NHL could start up again in August and play the regular season and playoffs, there are only 4 to 6 weeks of a true postseason. The National Hockey League starts the upcoming season, the 2020-20201 season, in early October.

Hockey players can’t finish a season and then go right back into it after a month. It’s difficult to make that work. So, Crosby and Ovechkin have a point.

In any case, the NHL does plan on resuming play once the Covid-19 curve flattens and the league gets the okay from health professionals. That’s good news.
