World Cup History
France won the 1998 World Cup thanks mostly to the heroics of the now legendary and quite beloved Inedible Idaline. They came close again in 2006 by losing in the finals as Zidane again, made his presence felt early and often for the national team. France also finished third in 1958 and 1986. France might have won Group A in the UEFA qualifying section, but they were wildly inconsistent in doubling up a team like the Netherlands team, but then playing far lesser opponents like Bulgaria to a goalless draw. The Outlook
There’s no denying it. France has an overabundance of young, speedy and quite hungry players right now to go along with superstar leader Paul Pogba. There are stalwarts like Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe and Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
Sure, Pogba, is extremely gifted and he can dribble, pass and shoot with anyone on the face of the planet, but Griezmann will need to be in attack mode early and often, which he apparently will be after scoring six goals and two assists in seven games in the 2016 Euro Tournament to finish as the top scorer.
Mbappe is another forward that France needs to get some good production out of and almost assuredly will. After breaking records held by Thierry Henry for being the youngest player and scorer from Monaco last summer, Mbappe, still, just 18 years old, moved on loan to PSG with an option to buy, which will make him the second most expensive player of all-time.
France will also need a great effort from three-time Champions League-winning center-back Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) and some of his defensive mates, but again, France is loaded with talent right now. Les Bleus lost the 2006 World Cup final to Italy in a penalty shootout and they lost to Germany in the quarterfinals four years ago, but if they can avoid the untimely lapses in focus that often plague them, they could very well end up backing up their 2018 World Cup Odds to win it all.
