Ukraine vs Italy

Just four days after reaching the quarterfinals, Ukraine got past Columbia 1-0 on Friday to advance to the semifinal round thanks to an 11th minute winner from Danylo Sikan.

“Before the World Cup, when I thought about the competition, I dreamt of winning it. And that dream is still alive, still real. We have lots of motivation. We’re playing for ourselves, our families and Ukraine” Sikan said.

The Italians won a tight quarterfinal 4-2 against Mali on Friday after getting some help from referees who sent off Mali’s Ousmane Diakite after only 21 minutes.

Prediction

Italy has been rock-solid throughout the FIFA U-20 tournament, but I like Italy to get the job done in this one simply because they have the more explosive offense. The Italins have outscored the opposition 4-2 through four matches while Ecuador has scored and allowed an identical two goals. I like Italy to get it done and you should too.

Ecuador vs. South Korea

Overall prohibitive favorite Ecuador has won three straight matches including a hard-fought 2-1 win over the United States on Saturday.

South Korea is on fire, having won four straight matches including a 3-3 draw against Senegal on Saturday.

“I knew our team could go this far. Our young players have had the opportunity to get good experiences, and they’ve been able to build to self-confidence. And that contributes to success in these situations. The organization of this team could not be achieved overnight. It took two years. That is why I looked for equality and mental strength in all my players,” Korea Republic coach Chung Jungyong said.

Prediction

While Ecuador is the overall favorite to win the U-20 World Cup, I’m going with South Korea for the big upset. The South Koreans have been rock-solid at both ends of the pitch and they’re the hotter of the two teams involved in this semifinal pairing. South Korea forward Young-Woo Cho is tied with Ecuador’s Gonzalo Plata as the best goal scorer in this pairing, But I’m going with South Korea’s ability to get goals from others to be the driving factor that puts them over the top in this affair.
