After signing Messi, Paris’ odds dive

Paris Saint-Germain wants a Champions League title. Hours, minutes maybe, after Barcelona President Joan LaPorte declared that Messi wouldn’t play for the only club team he’s known during his career, PSG started working the phones.

Both Lionel Messi and PSG head coach and manager Mauricio Pochettino are Argentinians. Pochettino let the world know that Paris wanted Messi.

The move gave PSG a big leg up on signing the greatest player of all time. The only other team with funds, and the perceived desire, to land Messi appeared to be owner Sheikh Mansour and Manchester City.

But City has said they’re angling to acquire Tottenham star striker Harry Kane. Pep Guardioloa, the Sky Blues’ coach and the man who helped Messi climb to legendary status at Camp Nou, declared Manchester City wouldn’t pursue the superstar.

Paris struck quickly. The day after LaPorte’s announcement, a deal was on the table for Lionel’s services. A couple of days after that, Messi was in Paris ready to sign.

Do the new odds on Paris Saint-Germain make them an underlay or overlay?

Two things about PSG to keep in mind. First, Messi heads to a team that already boasts Brazilian Neymar. Paris offered Neymar a contract, and he signed, for the next four years, which makes PSG Neymar’s team.

Neymar and Messi play well together. Neither had an issue with each other while they both were at Barcelona.

Second, signing Messi isn’t the only big deal Paris made this summer. PSG also landed Sergio Ramos, whom some soccer fans believe is the greatest player to ever put on a Real Madrid uniform. Yes, greater than Ronaldo.

Ramos may have a bigger impact regarding what happens on the pitch. Messi will sell more jerseys for sure, but Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, when healthy, are already the top striking pair in club soccer.

Pochettino will count on Ramos to protect the back, something Paris struggled with during the Champions League and in losses to Ligue 1 squads like Lille. If Ramos remains in excellent form throughout the UCL Season, and Mbappe and Neymar stay healthy, the current odds on Paris Saint-Germain will look like a gift.

What are the two teams that could possibly beat PSG for the Champions League title?

Bayern Munich is obvious, but Munich may not be nearly as strong this season as they have been the past couple of seasons. BM is working towards signing Erling Haaland.

They appear set on taking their Champions League punches in the 2021-2022 season in order to assess and ready themselves for a Haaland play.

Manchester City will be tough. So will Chelsea. If Thomas Tuchel can acquire Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, the Blues will be strong.

It’s true that Lukaku struggled in his first stint at Stamford Bridge. But he’s better than that and he’s had a big time resurgence in Serie A, leading Inter to the title last season.

City will make the deal for Harry Kane before the Aug. 31 transfer window closes. Kane wants out and he wants to play with the Sky Blues. The Hotspur must acquire as much cash as they can to ready for next year’s transfer window.

Even without Kane, Pep’s squad is loaded. So give the Sky Blues a real shot to upset Paris.

What soccer club at +1500 odds or higher offers overlay odds to win the UCL?

Three teams could surprise. Manchester United acquired Jadon Sancho. Sancho set up Haaland while at Dortmund. In a Red Devil kit, Sancho could blossom into one of the best passing strikers in the world.

Both Real Madrid and Juventus hired ex-mangers to help return them to glory. Massimiliano Allegri will coach Ronaldo at Juvy while Real Madrid rehired Carlo Ancelloti.

Allegri and Ancelloti were at the head of Juventus and Real Madrid during both teams’ best Champions League runs. History should repeat itself, especially, at Juventus because Allegri will force the Serie A squad to return to their defensive first style.

If you’re looking for a squad other than Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Manchester City to back, consider going with Man United, Juventus, or Real Madrid.
