The 2023 MLS season is off to an exciting start, as teams are still adjusting to a different off-season routine in the wake of the 2022 World Cup. The Revolution won the Supporter’s Shield in 2021, but stumbled to a 10th-place finish in the Eastern Conference last season. NYCFC were defending champions last season, and managed to make the playoffs before falling to Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference finals.
Fortunes have shifted for New England in the opening weeks of the season, as they are nearly atop the standings in the Eastern Conference, including a big win over Nashville SC. NYCFC opened their season with a loss to Nashville, but have improved in the weeks since.
With some early Eastern Conference bragging rights on the line, this match is shaping up to be an important one for each team’s playoff hopes.

New England Attack
New England have scored five goals so far on the season, averaging around ten shots per game. They complete passes at an 80% rate, and they remain a potent goalscoring threat thanks to a balanced attack featuring stars like Jozy Altidore, Bobby Wood, and Gustavo Bou.
New England Defense
The Revolution have shut out three of their opponents so far, so there is a bit of concern when it comes to their goals against numbers. They allowed four goals to defending champions LA FC, causing some questions to arise about the strength of their schedule.
New England has one of the better discipline records in the league so far, though they did give up a penalty to LAFC. Their backline has tons of experience, including Omar Gonzalez and Andrew Farrell, and they win an average of 17 aerial duels a game.
New York City Attack
New York City also have five goals scored on the season, though one of those came thanks to an own goal from Inter Miami’s Christopher McVey. Two of their designated players, Talles Magno and Santiago Rodriguez, scored in their match against D.C. United, but it remains to be seen if NYCFC can score if their best players are having off days.
New York averages 10.5 shots per game, with an 81% pass accuracy rating, so their buildup play is certainly reliable enough. There is a concern that they have not been able to score against the better teams in the league this season, like Nashville SC in the opener.
New York City Defense
NYFC have allowed five goals on the season, one more than they have scored, but they do have one shutout to their names against Inter Miami. They are one of the least disciplined teams in the league currently, with twelve yellow cards, and they are much weaker in the air, with only 15 aerial duels won per game. Designated player Thiago Martins will have to step his game up to keep New England out of their net.
