Safe Bets in Euro 2016

We are only about halfway through the first batch of group games at Euro 2016, but there are already a couple of teams who have shown their intent, as well as a few that have made it clear that they are probably not going to be a factor in this tournament. When looking at potential safe bets for the Euros, it’s probably a good idea to look at who might go through to the net round from the group stages. While I like France to win the whole thing on their home turf, I still believe it’s a little too early to really make an overall prediction. After all, we don’t know who will face who just yet, so instead, let’s take a look at each of the 6 groups to see where your safest bets may lie. Safe Bets in Euro 2016

   

Group A

France look to be an absolute certainty to come out of this group, especially after winning their opening game against Romania. Neither Albania nor Switzerland look as though they will be able to stop the hosts in France’s remaining two group games, so take them to finish at the top, quite possibly with maximum points.

Group B

Wales are the surprise leaders in this group after winning their first game against Slovakia. They will have a tougher test in the second game against an England team that had their hearts broken in injury time against Russia. Wales will probably settle for a tie, but I still like England to come out of this group. They created countless chances against Russia, and would have won easily had they taken just a couple.

Group C

The Germans had to work hard to get their 2-0 win over Ukraine, and they will have another tough test versus Poland in their next game up. They may not be playing up to the standards of the team that won the World Cup 2 years ago, but they should still win this group comfortably.

Group D

Croatia and Spain share the top spot in this group after both winning 1-0 in their opening games. Spain looked a lot more convincing in their victory over the Czech Republic, and could easily have had a bigger winning margin with some better finishing. I still like Spain to win this group going away.

Group E

The first two games in this group will be played on Monday afternoon, and while we are still waiting to see how each team looks, I think the smart money has to go on Italy. They are, as always, defensively sound, and are going to be tough to break down. They may well settle for a tie versus Belgium, and that should be enough to set them up for a group win.

Group F

This may well be the safest bet of them all, as I just don’t see Hungary, Austria, or Iceland keeping Portugal out of the top spot. Yes, Portugal tend to struggle in major tournaments, but they look like a mortal lock to get out of this group without breaking too much of a sweat.
