The Spanish international team was viewed as perennial underachievers on the world stage until they won it all in 2010, beating Netherlands with an extra-time goal in the final. Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata, Isco and David Silva all scored an identical five goals in qualifying. Julen Lopetegui also used the matches to incorporate new players like Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio and Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez.

The Outlook

The managerial change from Vicente del Bosque to Julen Lopetegui has apparently reinvigorated a Spanish international team that was apparently in need of some motivation after failing to defend their world title in 2014 and European crown in 2016. Whatever Spain gets out of aging star Andres Iniesta will be a big plus after he scored the sole goal of the 2010 World Cup final to give Spain its World Cup title.
