2019 Australian Open Betting Preview – Women’s Draw

Written by on January 14, 2019

One of the great things about the women’s game is that we tend to have a very even playing field, which means that we tend to see some surprises along the way. That can make handicapping tournament a little tough, but it also makes them incredibly fun to watch. Another great thing to love about the women’s tournament is that, given the level of parity, you can get your favorite player at some very good odds.

We are looking at a dog eat dog battle after we get through the first couple of rounds, so let’s look at 4 players who might be able to claim the title, according to the latest tennis betting odds, at the Australian Open in a couple of weeks.

2019 Australian Open Betting Preview – Women’s Draw

Serena Williams

Williams is chasing history as she goes in search of her 24th Grand Slam title, but she is also looking at a little bit of redemption. Serena took a lot of flak after her behavior at the US Open, a performance that many people felt took much of the spotlight off the eventual winner, Naomi Osaka.

Williams publicly addressed her behavior and has now put it all in the past, allowing her to focus on the task at hand. She is in as the #16 seed, but she is still considered the favorite to win it all, despite potentially needing to meet #1 seed Simona Halep in the later rounds. I have Williams going to the final, but I don’t see her winning.

Angelique Kerber

Kerber is no stranger to winning at Grand Slam events, with one of those wins coming here at Melbourne back in 2016. She also picked up the win at Wimbledon last season and it can be argued that she is in the best form of her career right now.

Kerber breezed through the opening round with a straight-sets win, and I would not be surprised to see her deliver a similar performance in Round 2, where she will face Brazilian star, Beatriz Haddad Maia. I think it will be Kerber who comes away with the win in the women’s tournament.

Naomi Osaka

This is likely to be the first time that the pressure is going to be on Osaka, as she is now coming into this tournament as a Grand Slam winner, taking the US Open crown last season. She is in as the #4 seed here, so she should have a couple of easier matches in the opening rounds, which should help her get some confidence going before getting into the tougher matches in the later rounds.

Naomi Osaka is one of the favorites at the latest 2019 Australian Open Betting odds to win it all.

There is no denying that her run to the US Open title last year was a great achievement, but I am not so sure she can get to the final this time, although a run to the quarter-finals is not out of the question.

Petra Kvitova

When previewing and handicapping the Australian Open, it’s often a good idea to take a look at the Sydney International tournament, which serves as the warm-up for this one.

If we use that event as a barometer, then it’s fair to suggest that Kvitova should be among the favorites here, as she made a run to the final, coming away as the winner of that event. She is a solid bet to make a deep run in Melbourne, and may even be a good bet to win it all.
