With the first week of the 2021 Australian Open rolling into the weekend and the field of legitimate title contenders really starting to take shape, it’s time to take a look at the top three ATP World Tour performers that could cash in at the first grand slam event of the calendar year. That said, let’s have a closer look at those players so you can keep betting against their Australian Open odds.

Will Novak Djokovic live up to his status as the prohibitive favorite to win the 2021 Australian Open?
Could the sweet-swinging Serbian get beat out for the title by world No. 2 Rafael Nadal or still blossoming players like Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev? Let’s find out.

Analysis: Just over a week ago, I had Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev as my top three picks to win the 2021 Aussie Open title, with Medvedev being my pick to nail down his first slam title.
As it stands right now, I still have Medvedev as my tournament winner, though Djokovic and Zverev look slightly less daunting after each had to go four sets in one of their first two matches.
Medvedev took out dangerous Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in a dominating opening round performance. He’ll face Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena next and should make quick work of 27-year-old world No. 99.
Djokovic needed four difficult sets to get past American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the second round. While I expect Djokovic to subdue American Taylor Fritz in the third round, I suspect weariness could become a problem for Djokovic at some point moving forward.
Zverev needed four sets to win his opener against the unheralded Marcos Giron 6-7 (8), 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-2, but looked a lot better in dispatching Maxime Cressy 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Zverev will take on dangerous world No. 36 Adrian Mannarino next.
I may have made a boo-boo by omitting world No. 3 Dominic Thiem as one of my top three picks, seeing as how he reached last year’s finals before falling to Djokovic in a five-set thriller. Thiem beat Mikhail Kukushkin in three sets in the opening round before dispatching Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 the last time out. Thiem will have his hands full tying to dispatch the athletically gifted Nick Kyrgios, but I expect his big edge in maturity and focus to prevail.
One of my top under the radar picks to win, young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime and another Canadian, Denis Shapovalov will hook up in a third round thriller. I’m expecting the winner to challenge for a berth in the quarterfinals no matter who prevails.
My guy, Diego Schwartzman is still looking good while talented Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas looked fantastic in winning his opener over former Top 20 player Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.
Rafael Nadal battled a bad back to win his opener over Laslo Djere, but the hard courts just don’t suit Nadal very well these days, which is why I’ve ruled Rafa out as a potential winner.
The Top Three – Plus One
As it stands right now, I’m going with a slightly altered top three of Medvedev, Djokovic and Thiem, who replaces my previous pick of Alexander Zverev. I’m still going with the cerebral Medvedev to get the win, although I’m also going to predict that young Russian Andrey Rublev challenges for a spot in the quarters at the very least.
As I mentioned over a week ago, Medvedev is 3-4 in seven career matches against Djokovic, but has won three of the last four meetings. I know Novak Djokovic has won two straight Down Under and four of the last six overall, but my gut tells me the 33-year-old Serbian is not winning this year’s Australian Open – and I’m sticking with that!
