Just prior to the start of this year’s Aussie Open, I had Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin as my top three picks to win this year’s first slam. While I eventually ended up picking Williams as my pick to get the win, it was a gut-wrenching decision that left me completely exhausted.

Now, four days into the Australian Open, I remain unperturbed about my top three picks, although I will be the first to admit that a handful of other stars are looking good right now.

Osaka is into the third round after unmercifully pounding Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-2 and Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3 in her first two matches. Next up in Ons Jabeur and I expect Osaka to advance, even if Jabeur does make it a bit more difficult.

Williams is also into the third round after stomping Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-1 in her opener and Nina Stojanovic 6-3, 6-0 on Tuesday. Next up is Anastasia Potapova and Williams is a virtual lock to win that match. Right now, the seven-time Aussie Open champ looks fit and dangerous with a capital D.

As far as Sofia Kenin is concerned, the American struggled to get past  Australian Maddison Inglis in her opener 7-5, 6-4. Still, I like the fiery Kenin and believe she’s going to have a legitimate shot to repeat.

There is one player that I overlooked as far as a potential winner is concerned and that’s Poland native Iga Swiatek. The 19-year-old smacked Aranxta Rus around 6-1, 6-3 in her opener and got by one of my favorite WTA Tour players, Italian Camila Giorgi, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. Swiatek started her 2021 campaign by taking home the hardware at the Gippsland Trophy and looks like a player that is going to seriously challenge for multiple gran slams in her career after stunning everyone en route to last year’s French Open title.

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty is another player that is going to have a great chance to challenge for the win. The 2019 French Open winner and 2020 Australian Open finalist beat the hell out of Danka Kovinic in her opener 6-0, 6-0 and looks as dangerous as anyone as she heads into the second round.

“It’s tough to expect that all the top players will win every match, because some of them had to do quarantine 14 days, they couldn’t practice,” Halep said recently. “Also, for us, those who practiced, [it] was not that easy even if we had the…good possibility to train.

“The times are not easy for everybody, so [the] mental part is paying a lot of work this period, and we will see day by day,” halep added. “So I don’t really feel like the top players will win every match this period.”

As is stands right now, my top two picks for Williams and Osaka remain unchanged. I’m a little iffy on Kenin until further notice and I believe Ash Barty or some other title contender like Simona Halep or Elina Svitolina could challenge for a berth in the finals.
