Names to Watch Out For

Jannik Sinner

In the current world no.17, Jannik Sinner enters the 2021 Queens Club Championship with a 241-13 record on the year. He has been placed in the bottom half of the draw alongside world no.26 Aslan Karatsev and world no.15 Denis Shapovalov.

The 19-year-old is expected to face Alexander Bublik in the second round and Cameron Norrie in the last eight. That’s not exactly a demanding schedule for the up-and-coming Italian; however, he has not appeared in many grass-court matches on the senior level (4-6) and should be adequately tested in England.

Denis Shapovalov

As the second-seeded player at the 2021 Queens Club Championship, Denis Shapovalov will have to overcome the defending champion Feliciano Lopez in the second round of the tournament, which won’t be an easy task for the world no. 26.

The 22-year-old holds a 15-12 record on the year and is 1-1 on the grass in 2021. His only two grass-court matches took place last week when he appeared at the Stuttgart Open. There Shapovalov beat his potential second-round opponent Lopez with 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, but lost against Marin Čilić with 5-7, 6-7.

Andy Murray

The former world no.1 and current no.123, Andy Murray travels to Queen’s Club hoping to emulate his success from 2016, when he last won this tournament.

Although the Brit is no longer as good as he used to be back then, he is still the winningest player at the Queens Club Championship with five titles to his name. He won those between 2009-2016, which includes back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2016.

He has since appeared in two iterations of the tournament (2017, 2018) and crashed out of R1 in both. In 2017, Murray lost to Jordan Thompson (6-7, 2-6) and Nicolas Kyrgios (6-2, 6-7, 5-7) in 2018.

Murray’s only notable singles achievement of the year came back in February when he made it to the finals of the Challenger Biella. Despite his lack of success in 2021, and for a good part of the last four years, Murray is still one of the best grass players in history with a 78.11% win rate across 146 matches (115-31)
