All The Eyes on Medvedev

The 2021 BNB Paribas Open will feature some of the best ATP tennis players in the world, including the 2021 U.S. Open champion, Daniil Medvedev, who has received the top seed.

The 25-year-old Russian is expected to shine in Indian Wells as the top-rated player at the tournament and one of the most in-form tennis players in the world. Although he hasn’t won as much as Novak Djokovic (who won’t attend the tournament) in 2021, Medvedev has done enough to deserve respect.

Besides his victory at the 2021 U.S. Open, Medvedev has also reached R4 in Wimbledon, quarter-finals at the 2021 French Open, and made finals in Australia. What’s even more impressive, however, is Medvedev’s record on hard courts.

Across 35 hard-court games in 2021, Medvedev has lost only four (31/4) and is 48/10 on the year across all surfaces. Although Medvedev has long been regarded as a hard-court specialist (74.06% career win rate), he has seemingly found a new gear this year.

With a 31/4 record, Medvedev is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career – he managed 14/4 on hard courts in 2020 and 34/8 in 2019. Will he manage to keep his wheels spinning is anyone’s guess, but with the excellent form the Russian has been showing, it’s hard to doubt his chances to win the 2021 BNP Paribas Open.

Tsitsipas Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Stefanos Tsitsipas enters the 2021 BNP Paribas Open as the second-seeded player and current world no.3.

The Greek tennis player might not have won a single Grand Slam title on the year; he has done well enough.

Tsitsipas has made it to the semi-finals in Australia and made his first Grand Slam finals in France, where he lost to Djokovic.

His last two attempts at his first Grand Slam title hadn’t gone as expected, with an R1 exit from the 2021 Wimbledon and R3 exit from the 2021 U.S. Open.

Despite his lack of Grand Slam titles, Tsitsipas has made it to the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters and Canadian Open and has reached the quarter-finals of the German Open.

What’s more, Tsitsipas tends to do well on hard courts, where he is 24/7 on the year and holds a respectable 64.54% career win rate. Not as good as Medvedev, but Tsitsipas deserves some attention.

Zverev Is a Serious Threat

The current no.4, Alexander Zverev should be considered a serious threat for the 2021 BNP Paribas Open. Like Tsitsipas, Zverev has not won a single Grand Slam on the year, but he has come close three times – QF in Australis and two SF in U.S. and France.

Besides his excellent Grand Slam showings, Zverev has also won Cincinnati Masters and the Madrid Open. What’s more, he made it to the quarter-finals at the 2021 Italian Open and finals of the Mexican Open.

Evidently, Zverev has the talent to compete for the titles, and he is also fairly efficient on hard courts. The German player is 26/5 on the surface in 2021 and has a 66.12% career win rate.

However, the latter number might be a bit misleading since Zverev has only recently found traction on hard courts – 12/7 in 2020, 23/10 in 2019, and 26/12 in 2018. Zverev is improving at a very fast rate, and if he can keep it up, it’s only a matter of time before he wins his first Grand Slam.
